Chaos Erupts During UBO Championship Fight in Turkey
A boxing match in Turkey turned into a scene of chaos when spectators and members of the opposing team stormed the ring, leading to a violent confrontation. The event, which was supposed to be a celebration of victory, ended in injury and confusion.
The fight took place at the Besirli Sports Hall, where Russian fighter Sergei Gorokhov (16-11-2) faced off against Emirkhan Kalkhan of Turkey (7-0). Gorokhov secured a stoppage victory in the second round, winning the UBO championship belt. After the win, he celebrated with his corner team and approached Kalkhan to check on his opponent.
However, this moment of sportsmanship did not go unnoticed. A member of Kalkhan’s team reportedly pushed Gorokhov away, prompting one of Gorokhov’s cornermen to push back. This minor altercation quickly escalated into a full-blown clash between the two teams.
Spectators Join the Chaos
As tensions rose, spectators began to invade the ring. Plastic chairs were thrown into the squared circle, and Gorokhov’s trainer was attacked and kicked by several individuals. Gorokh0v himself was also targeted, being blindsided and beaten with chairs while others punched and kicked him on the canvas.
The violence left the Russian fighter and his team injured, with Gorokhov later posting an update from a nearby hospital. He shared details about the incident, mentioning that his trainer, Ismail, had suffered a head injury and was undergoing an MRI scan. Gorokhov said he had been the least affected, crediting his gloves for protecting him during the attack.
He also revealed that around 80 people were involved in the assault. “They got in the ring and beat us up after our brilliant victory in the second round, where we knocked this fighter out twice,” he said. “But the Turks behaved very badly.”
Gorokhov expressed relief that no one had died, stating that they had received a police escort and would be leaving the hotel immediately. He hinted at plans to fly to Georgia and then travel overnight to Kaliningrad, suggesting that they would not stay in Turkey for long.
Aftermath and Investigation
Despite the initial victory, the result of the fight was eventually overturned due to the melee. According to the rules, once the ropes have been breached and outside individuals enter the ring, the outcome of the match is voided.
An investigation is now underway, with officials expected to impose suspensions and fines on those involved. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of athletes and the conduct of spectators during high-profile sporting events.
