A Man Faces Federal Investigation After Throwing a Rock at a Protected Monk Seal in Hawaii
A man is currently under federal investigation after allegedly throwing a rock at a protected Hawaiian monk seal on a beach in Lahaina, Maui. The incident has sparked concern among local wildlife conservationists and residents.
Kaylee Schnitzer was on the beach when she saw a man and a woman approaching an endangered monk seal. According to her account, the man picked up what appeared to be a coconut-sized rock and hurled it toward the animal. Video footage captured the moment the object landed inches from the seal, which seemed visibly startled by the action.
After the incident, the seal lay down and remained motionless for some time. It is still unclear whether the animal was injured. Kaylee, who was filming the event, could be heard in the background yelling, “What are you doing? Why would you throw a rock at it?”
She later told KHON 2 that she and a friend contacted the police. The man reportedly responded with, “I don’t care. Fine me, I’m rich.” This statement has raised questions about the individual’s awareness of the legal and ethical implications of his actions.
The man, identified as a 37-year-old from Seattle, Washington, was detained by police upon their arrival at the scene. Although he has not been criminally charged, he is now facing a federal investigation led by the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement.
The seal involved in the incident, known locally as Lani, is a well-known figure in the area. It is often seen playing and swimming in the shallow waters off the coast of Lahaina. Lani is one of the few remaining members of a critically endangered species.
