The End of BBC Comedy ‘Film Club’
The BBC comedy series Film Club, starring Aimee Lou Wood, is reportedly coming to an end after just one season. The six-part show, which aired in October last year, follows Wood as a film lover who suffers from agoraphobia and struggles with her best friend moving away. The Sex Education star was nominated for a Bafta TV Award for her performance in the series.
Despite receiving positive reviews and generating awards buzz, it seems that the show will not be returning for a second series. According to Deadline, the decision was made mutually by Wood, her co-creator Ralph Davis, and the BBC. The outlet reported that Wood wants to focus on other writing projects, while the BBC is “relaxed about moving on from the series.”
The Independent has contacted both the BBC and Wood’s representative for further comments.
Fans of the rom-com were quick to express their disappointment when the series first aired. Many praised it as “brilliant” and even suggested it should be available on Netflix so more people could watch it. One fan wrote: “Film Club with Aimee Lou Wood should be on Netflix, so everyone could watch it too.” Another said, “It’s unbelievably good.”
While Wood was nominated for Best Actress at the Bafta TV Awards this year, she ultimately lost out to Narges Rashidi, who won for her role in Prisoner 951. Wood was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The White Lotus, but the award went to Christine Tremarco from Adolescence.

Aimee Lou Wood’s Inspiration Behind Film Club
Speaking to The Independent in October last year, Wood revealed that she was inspired to write Film Club during the lockdown period. She wanted to create something that offered an escape during a time when people were looking for stories to connect with.
“TV during that time was the only way you could access the world,” she said. “We needed plot. We needed to be taken away. We needed escape.”
In contrast to moody romance dramas like Normal People, Wood aimed to tell a story about “nerds falling in love.” She explained that she wanted to see “neurotic, messy people falling in love instead of really cool, silent people.”
Aimee Lou Wood’s Recent Projects
Wood, 32, recently hosted Saturday Night Live UK, where she received praise for her performance. Many viewers took to social media to suggest she should be cast in Doctor Who after starring in a sketch about the sci-fi show.
In the skit, she played a companion of the Doctor’s (Hammed Animashaun) who couldn’t hide her disgust upon meeting a grotesque-looking creature. Fans were quick to respond, with one user saying: “Aimee Lou Wood as the doctor would be insane.” Another commented: “Aimee Lou Wood as the Doctor or a companion feels right.”
