Delta Goodrem’s Eurovision Debut Sparks Global Debate
Delta Goodrem made a stunning appearance at the Eurovision 2026 opening ceremony in Vienna, dazzling fans with her glamorous red carpet look. The Australian superstar, 41, arrived in a shimmering gold gown, waving the Australian flag as she represented the nation on the turquoise carpet. Her presence was met with mixed reactions, both locally and internationally.
While many local fans praised Delta as Australia’s ‘queen’ and ‘golden girl’, international viewers were left questioning why Australia is participating in the iconic song contest. Social media platforms quickly became a hub for discussions, with users expressing confusion over the country’s involvement in what is traditionally seen as a European event.
Some comments were blunt and direct. One viewer asked, “Why is Australia allowed to enter a European competition?” Another added, “Lol Australia entering the Eurovision??! Pity they couldn’t sign up to join the Army!” These remarks reflected a broader sentiment that Australia’s geographical distance from Europe raised questions about its place in the competition.
Another comment stated, “Unfortunately Delta could be the absolute best but Australia’s distance will mean Australia will never win.” Others took a more sarcastic approach, with one critic writing, “The reason Aussies love Eurovision is because we find it unintentionally hilarious.” Another suggested, “Rather than send someone like Delta, we should be sending someone so awful that it gives all the other countries back some of the laughs we’ve had at their contestants.”
Despite the backlash, Eurovision loyalists defended Australia’s participation, highlighting the country’s long-standing relationship with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises the event. One fan explained, “Australia and Israel are not European. All participating nations are members of the European Broadcasting Union. The whole show promotes international broadcasting cooperation and friendship between peoples.”
Another user added, “Australia was invited due to its substantial Eurovision fan base and remains eligible through the EBU.” This explanation helped to clarify the reasons behind Australia’s inclusion in the competition.
Back home, Delta’s supporters were overwhelmingly positive. Fans took to social media to express their excitement, with one writing, “Woohoo she’s getting ready to be crowned Queen of Pop.” Another gushed, “This is BEYOND epic!!! Our golden girl!” TV personality Marie Vaara also praised Delta, calling her “Our Australian ICON.”
Supporters were confident in her chances, with one declaring, “If you don’t win this Delta then Australia needs to bow out. There is no better voice than yours.” Musician Amy Shark added a light-hearted touch, joking, “Wow this is like the hunger games!!!” while Rove McManus encouraged her with, “WOW! Go get it.”
Delta’s red carpet appearance came just days after she unveiled the first footage of her Eurovision performance for her power anthem Eclipse. The visually ambitious staging – featuring more than 7,000 Swarovski crystals, celestial visuals, and dramatic cosmic-inspired effects – has already positioned Australia among this year’s frontrunners. Her preview clip has gained significant online attention, earning over 40,000 likes and placing her alongside heavyweights like France and Italy.
While the debate over Australia’s place in Eurovision continues to divide viewers, one thing is clear: Delta’s presence has sparked major global attention. Whether critics love it or loathe it, Australia is once again impossible to ignore on the Eurovision stage.
