King Confided to Idris Elba He’d DJ at Palace Garden Party, Actor Reveals

A Royal Celebration of Youth and Music

The King recently made a surprising appearance at a Buckingham Palace garden party, where he took to the decks as a DJ. This unexpected move was shared by Sir Idris Elba, who was among the many notable figures in attendance. The event was held to mark the 50th anniversary of the King’s Trust, a youth charity that has been making a difference since its establishment in 1976.

Notable Guests and Their Stories

The gathering brought together a range of celebrity ambassadors for the Trust, including broadcasters Ant and Dec, Holly Willoughby, actors Dame Helen Mirren and Damian Lewis, and Sir Idris himself, who is an alumnus of the charity. The King spent over an hour greeting guests, including around 50 young people and alumni who have benefited from the Trust’s support.

As the rain poured down, the King made his way up the garden steps with an umbrella, pausing to speak with Christian St Louis and Sir Idris, who were stationed near some DJ decks. St Louis, a 22-year-old from Middleton in Greater Manchester, had taken a DJing course through the Trust and performed at the party while guests danced in the downpour, holding umbrellas.

When asked about his conversation with the King, Sir Idris shared a light-hearted moment. “Well, this morning we had an amazing time at the National Youth Music Theatre and I was telling him that like it just took me back to when I first did that and I was laughing about that and he said he was going to DJ today, and he did.”

“Well he pressed play and as a DJ I know that’s the hardest part,” the 53-year-old actor joked.

A Personal Journey of Transformation

Darnell Allman-Smith, a 22-year-old from Brixton in south London, shared his own story of transformation through the Trust. He described how he was going through a “bit of a depressive episode” when he secured the last place on the charity’s Making it in Media course with Ant and Dec.

“Growing up, my interest has always been in film, media and music and whatnot so it was almost like a gift by god that there was that one spot left and at first I said no because I felt like I wasn’t ready for that and then they kindly held the position open to give me time to reconsider.”

The course, which lasted two weeks, helped Darnell overcome his depression and social anxiety. “Within that two weeks, I got over my depression, my social anxiety, I started to make friends again, and life kind of slowly got back to normal.”

Darnell, who has since worked on a Netflix show, expressed his gratitude to the King during their brief chat at the garden party. He also mentioned that his mother wanted to pass on her personal thanks, as she noticed a positive change in him after joining the Trust. “Her health has significantly increased. So not only has he helped me, he’s also helped my mum which I’m extremely grateful for.”

A Celebration of Community and Support

The King, dressed in a grey suit, blue tie, and a red Kings Trust pin on his lapel, arrived at the party on the palace steps and descended after the band played the national anthem. He was presented with a yearbook documenting stories from staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries of the Trust by Ant and Dec.

The event attracted more than 4,000 guests, who enjoyed refreshments such as mini scones with blackcurrant jam and clotted cream, chocolate tiffin, elderflower, trout, and lemon cream cheese mini bagels. Despite the gloomy weather, guests smiled and chatted excitedly, craning to get photos of the King.

Former England men’s football coach Sir Gareth Southgate and musician and presenter Myleene Klass were also present. During a typical summer gathering, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches, and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed by attendees.

The Impact of the King’s Trust

Over the past 50 years, the King’s Trust has supported more than 1.3 million young people across the UK. Its mission is to end youth unemployment and help more young people create better futures for themselves. The garden party served as a testament to the charity’s enduring impact and the positive changes it continues to bring to the lives of countless individuals.
