Elon Musk Criticizes Lupita Nyong’o’s Role in Nolan’s Odyssey

Elon Musk’s Latest Criticism of Christopher Nolan and “The Odyssey”

Elon Musk has once again sparked controversy by expressing his disapproval of Christopher Nolan’s casting choices for the upcoming film The Odyssey. The billionaire, known for his active presence on social media, has taken to his platform to voice his opinions on the director’s decision to cast Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. This is not the first time Musk has weighed in on the project, and his comments have reignited discussions about representation and artistic choices in Hollywood.

Nyong’o’s Dual Role in the Film

In an interview with Time magazine, Nolan confirmed that Nyong’o will play two distinct characters in the film: Helen of Troy, portrayed as the most beautiful woman in the world, and Clytemnestra, her half-sister. The latter is married to Agamemnon, played by Benny Safdie. This dual role adds complexity to the narrative, but it has also drawn scrutiny from critics and commentators.

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh took to Musk’s platform to express his dissatisfaction with the casting choice, stating, “Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’ But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave ‘the most beautiful woman’ role to a white woman. Nolan is technically talented but a coward.” Musk responded with a simple “True,” further amplifying the debate.

The Question of Awards and Inclusion

Musk also addressed the topic of race swapping in films, responding to a user who questioned why some filmmakers choose to cast actors of different races in roles traditionally played by white actors. His reply was brief: “He wants the awards.” While Musk did not elaborate, this comment suggests that he believes Nolan may have made the casting choice to meet inclusion criteria set by the Academy of Motion Pictures, which are often required for best picture nominations.

Nolan’s Defense of His Choices

In a lengthy interview with Time, Nolan defended his decisions without directly addressing Musk’s criticisms. He discussed his approach to adapting Homer’s epic, emphasizing his commitment to fidelity to the original text. For instance, he complicated the reunion between Helen and Menelaus (played by Jon Bernthal), a scene that Time described as “too easily resolved” in the poem.

Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, highlighted Nolan’s adherence to Homer’s work, saying, “He’s [Nolan] very faithful to Homer because that’s not somebody you rewrite.”

Nolan also addressed criticism from purists regarding the design of Agamemnon’s armor, which some viewers found too dark. He explained that there are historical examples of Mycenaean daggers made of blackened bronze, suggesting that such materials could have been used in ancient times. Comparing his approach to that of Interstellar, he said, “For Interstellar, you’re looking at, ‘What is the best speculation of the future?’ When you’re looking at the ancient past, it’s actually the same thing.”

Musk’s Previous Criticisms

This is not the first time Musk has criticized The Odyssey. Earlier this year, when the casting of Nyong’o as Helen was still just a rumor, Musk called the choice “an insult” to Homer, who, according to him, described Helen of Troy as “fair skinned, blonde, and ‘the face that launched a thousand ships’ because she was so beautiful that men started a war over her.”

Whoopi Goldberg Speaks Out

Whoopi Goldberg and her co-hosts on The View addressed the controversy during their Hot Topics segment. The EGOT winner defended Nyong’o, stating, “I don’t know if you realize this, but Lupita is also considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. So I’m not sure what you’re trying to say.” She added that one should “look in the mirror” before commenting on others’ appearances.

Release Details and Cast

The Odyssey is set to release on July 17, 2026. It is the first feature-length film shot entirely in IMAX on film, completed in 91 days. The film features a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, and Elliot Page.
