A Surprising Discovery in a Bag of Lettuce
Woolworths has initiated an internal investigation after a live frog was discovered inside a bag of lettuce in a remote town in Western Australia. The unusual incident occurred at a shared house in Esperance, approximately 700 kilometers southeast of Perth. New Zealand couple Laura Jones and Billie Le Pine shared the story with 102.5 ABC Perth, describing how their flatmate made the unexpected find.
“Our flatmate came home, and he’s the most casual Australian ever, and he’s like, ‘Bro, I’ve got a lettuce, like a frog in my lettuce,’” Ms Jones said. She added that this kind of occurrence was quite out of the ordinary for Kiwis.
A video of the event was shared on social media, showing the small green frog sealed in the plastic bag. Mr Le Pine mentioned that the amphibian, which he believed had been transported from the eastern states, was about the size of his palm.
“It’s quite a decent-sized frog for a big adventure,” he said. “It would have probably come from east. Most of our vegetables come from eastern Australia to Esperance. The bag of lettuce does have holes in it to keep the produce fresh, so he had a snack and some air on his way over.”
Releasing the Frog into the Wild
The pair mentioned that their flatmate opened the bag outside the house, and the frog, whom they named Greg, was released into a local dam.
“We got him some fresh air, and then he released it with the lettuce,” Ms Jones explained. “We live close to a dam … [he] had a little swim around with his lettuce … and away he hopped.”
Mr Le Pine described the encounter as one of the most random experiences he had ever had while opening a bag of lettuce. He expressed relief that Greg was back in his natural habitat.
Woolworths Takes Action
In response to the incident, Woolworths confirmed it was investigating the matter with suppliers as a priority. However, the company stated that this was “an isolated event with no other reported cases.”
“Woolworths takes product quality and food safety very seriously,” the statement read. “We work with a number of lettuce growers in WA and across Australia. Our suppliers have rigorous processes to maintain product quality. For heads of lettuce, this involves washing and a number of quality checks, which include checking for foreign materials, before they are packaged and sent to our stores.”
This is not the first time an animal has been found in a packaged salad product at a Woolworths supermarket. In 2016, a viral social media video showed a large spider inside a pre-packaged Italian salad mix.
Conclusion
While the discovery of a frog in a bag of lettuce may seem bizarre, it highlights the importance of maintaining strict quality control measures in food production and packaging. Woolworths’ response indicates that such incidents are taken seriously, even if they are rare. The story of Greg, the frog who enjoyed a journey through a bag of lettuce, has become a memorable anecdote for those involved and a reminder of the unexpected twists that can occur in everyday life.
