Liverpool’s Manager Expresses Hope for Alexander Isak’s Return
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed hope that Alexander Isak will be available for the team’s upcoming season finale against Brentford. The Sweden international striker has had a challenging first year at Anfield, and his recent absence due to a minor injury was a setback in Friday night’s 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa. This loss has left the Reds’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League hanging in the balance.
Slot acknowledged that Isak missed pre-season training and later suffered a broken leg, which has impacted his availability. Despite this, the manager believes there is still a chance that Isak could return for the crucial match against Brentford, as the team may need to secure a win to ensure European Cup qualification.
“We’ve tried to be as careful as we could with him, taking into account that our other No.9, Hugo Ekitike, is out for such a long time, so we needed him as a result of that even more,” Slot said.
He also mentioned that missing pre-season and then dealing with a broken leg can lead to minor injuries when players are thrust back into high-intensity Premier League games. “I don’t think it can come to anyone as a surprise if you miss your pre-season, if you then break your leg, that minor injuries can occur if you have to start in Premier League games immediately in that intensity.”

Struggles with Set-Piece Goals
Liverpool’s performance at Villa Park was another example of their struggles with set-pieces, as they conceded three goals from such situations. This recurring issue has been a concern for Slot, who feels responsible for addressing it.
“It’s frustrating because as a manager you’re also responsible for if things happen time and time again,” he said.
Slot noted that while scoring two set-piece goals usually gives a team confidence, conceding three can be detrimental, especially when playing against evenly matched teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. “That makes it really hard if you play against equal teams – which United, Chelsea and Villa are – to win a game of football, and again that was shown.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the challenges, Slot remains focused on improving the team’s performance. He expects Isak to train with the squad this week but acknowledges that there are no guarantees regarding his availability for the upcoming match.
The manager emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes and ensuring that such issues do not repeat themselves. “You are hired to try to prevent that for the next time,” he added.
As the season draws to a close, Liverpool faces a critical moment where every game could determine their fate in the Champions League. With the right approach and improvements in key areas like set-pieces, the team may yet find a way to secure their place in Europe’s top competition.
