Unfortunate Incident During Second Test
During the opening day of the second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh at Sylhet on Saturday, Pakistani pace bowler Hasan Ali suffered a concerning head injury. The incident occurred in the eighth over of Bangladesh’s first innings when Hasan Ali attempted to take a return catch off the bowling of Tanzid Hasan Tamim. After failing to secure the catch, Hasan Ali’s head collided with the ground during his follow-through.
Hasan Ali appeared distressed following the incident and seemed disoriented as he tried to regain his balance. He was eventually stretchered off the field after medical personnel quickly attended to him. The event caused concern among the Pakistan team and spectators, especially considering the team’s current position in the series after losing the first Test.
Commentary from Cricbuzz
Commentary from Cricbuzz described the unfortunate incident as follows:
“Hasan Ali to Tanzid Hasan Tamim, no run, almost a return catch! Hard length delivery in the channel and angling across Tanzid. He hops and is early into the tuck across the line. Ends up getting a leading edge. Hasan Ali stretches his right hand out on his follow-through and only manages to get his fingertips to it. He then lands awkwardly and gets an impact on the right side of his head as his head slams onto the turf.”
Potential for Concussion Substitution
At present, there have been no updates regarding the severity of Hasan Ali’s injury. However, if his condition results in symptoms of concussion, Pakistan will be able to avail a like-for-like substitute according to ICC regulations. The only fast bowler currently in the Pakistan reserves squad is Amad Butt, who might make his Test debut at Hasan Ali’s expense.
Pakistan’s Struggles in the Series
The second Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan commenced with the tourists trailing 1-0 in the two-match Test series after suffering a heavy 104-run defeat in the first Test held at Mirpur. Pakistan has faced significant criticism following their loss in the last three matches against Bangladesh, including a comprehensive 2-0 defeat in the home series earlier this year in 2024.
Strong Start for Bangladesh
Prior to the innings, the Pakistan captain won the toss and chose to bowl first. Mohammad Abbas provided an early breakthrough for Pakistan by dismissing Mahmudul Hasan Joy on the very second ball of the innings. Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Mominul Haque scored 44 runs for the second wicket before Abbas again intervened, having Tanzid caught for 26 off 34 balls.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto continued to play with positive intent, similar to the first Test. Mominul Haque eventually fell to Khurram Shahzad, scoring 22. At lunch on day one, Bangladesh reached 101/3, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto on 26 not out and Mushfiqur Rahim on 18 not out.
