Billy Joel Honours Vienna at Eurovision Final

Billy Joel Honors Vienna in a Special Tribute at Eurovision

During the live final of the Eurovision Song Contest, iconic musician Billy Joel paid a heartfelt tribute to Vienna, often referred to as “the musician’s town.” The annual song contest took place in the Austrian capital, which also happens to be the name of one of Joel’s most beloved songs. This particular track has become a defining piece in his career, capturing the essence of aging gracefully and embracing life at a slower pace.

The song, “Vienna,” first appeared on Joel’s 1977 album The Stranger and was released as the B-side to the single “Just The Way You Are.” Over time, it has become one of his most memorable and enduring tracks, resonating with fans around the world.

In a pre-recorded video message during the Eurovision final, Joel reflected on the city’s rich musical heritage. He said: “Vienna is known as the musician’s town. You think of Beethoven’s Ninth, but you also think of the waltz and Strauss, which is wonderful, happy music. Then I also think of the cafe orchestras that play outdoors. It could be an accordion, a violin, and a piano, it could be a very small ensemble.”

He continued: “The music is there in so many different ways. You can even see it in the architecture. You look on some of the buildings and there’s a little angel playing a violin coming off the balcony of a building, and you don’t see that in other cities.”

Joel shared more personal insights into the inspiration behind the song. He revealed that “Vienna” was influenced by his half-brother, Alexander Joel, a renowned classical conductor. Alexander was born to their father, Howard Joel, after he divorced Billy’s mother and moved to Vienna.

Joel explained: “Well, I found out that my father was living in Vienna. He and my mother had broken up in the late 50s, and that he had married again and had another son who was born in Vienna. So I had to go and meet him.”

He added: “When I wrote ‘Vienna waits for you,’ I meant that it’s a place where you close the circle, where questions that you have become answered. Suddenly things started to make sense in the world for me, which is really what the song was about – slow down, and look around you, and have some gratitude for the way things are in your life, the good things in your life. That’s what Vienna represented to me.”

Following Joel’s touching tribute, Austrian singer-songwriter Cesar Sampson performed “Vienna” during the voting segment of the Eurovision final. His rendition brought the song to life once again, connecting with audiences and honoring the deep cultural significance of the city.

Through this moment, Billy Joel not only celebrated the beauty of Vienna but also reminded listeners of the importance of taking time to appreciate life’s simple joys. His words and music continue to inspire, leaving a lasting impression on both the city and its people.
