Dorrigo Escarpment Trail: A New Hike on the Coffs Coast

A New Adventure in the Heart of Nature

Work has officially begun on the four-day Dorrigo Great Escarpment Walk, marking the start of an exciting new multi-day hiking trail. This trail will showcase the raw beauty of Dorrigo and Bindarri National Parks, located on Gumbaynggirr Country. Spanning 54 kilometres, the Dorrigo Great Escarpment Walk is designed to invite nature enthusiasts to explore koala country and the cultural heritage of the Gumbaynggirr people. Hikers will be guided through lush, ancient rainforests and to breathtaking waterfalls, offering a unique and immersive experience.

Growing Demand for Nature-Based Experiences

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in demand for nature-based experiences. In the 2024/25 financial year, there were 6.81 million visits to North Coast parks. Additionally, in the last financial year, visitation to state and national parks reached record levels with 65.5 million visits. To meet this growing demand, the NSW government has invested $56.4 million into the Dorrigo Great Escarpment Walk project. This investment aims to further establish Dorrigo and the World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park as a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

A Significant Investment for the Region

Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe, highlighted the importance of national parks in creating memories for families and encouraging children to get outside. She noted that the Dorrigo Rainforest is one of the most loved and visited national parks. The project is expected to create 270 jobs on the Mid North Coast, providing a transformative investment for the region.

Supporting Local Communities

Minister for the North Coast, Janelle Saffin, emphasized the benefits of the project for local communities. By backing the Dorrigo Great Escarpment Walk, the government is creating local jobs, supporting small businesses, and ensuring more people can experience the region’s natural wonders. The Dorrigo Rainforest Centre will also be redeveloped into a low-profile building that blends seamlessly with the landscape. It is projected to attract 200,000 visitors annually.

Enhancing the Hiking Experience

To enhance the hiking experience, three new purpose-built camps will be added to the trail. These camps will include bunk huts, tent platforms, and communal shelters, providing hikers with comfortable resting spots to connect with nature.

A Biodiversity Hotspot

The park is home to over 30 mammal species, including the elusive spotted-tailed quoll, more than 120 bird species, and 44 reptiles and amphibians. This rich biodiversity makes it a paradise for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts.

What’s Next?

While an exact opening date or project timeframe has not yet been announced, the project is well underway. Visitors are encouraged to stay tuned for updates and prepare for an unforgettable journey through one of Australia’s most stunning natural landscapes.
