Tragedy on the Inca Trail: Victoria Police Sergeant Dies in Peru
A tragic incident has occurred on the Inca Trail in Peru, where an Australian man fell to his death while hiking to Machu Picchu. The victim has been identified as Mathew Cameron Paton, a 53-year-old Victoria Police sergeant. His passing has left colleagues and family devastated, with many reflecting on his life and contributions.
Rescue crews discovered the body of Sergeant Paton after he fell from the trail on Wednesday local time, according to reports. His remains were found the following day approximately 300 meters below the 50 Gradas section of the trail, where he had been hiking with a tour group and a guide.

Cusco Police Region Chief Virgilio Velasquez shared details of the incident, stating that Sergeant Paton and his wife arrived in Peru 12 days prior and were on a four-day hike to Machu Picchu. According to General Velasquez, the incident appears to have occurred when Sergeant Paton tripped while crossing a wooden bridge. He reportedly tried to hold onto the railing, but it gave way, causing him to fall into the ravine.

Sergeant Paton was known for his work at the Victoria Police Academy, where he taught recruits and officers responding to mental health incidents. He had recently been promoted to senior sergeant and was set to start his new role next month. Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush expressed his condolences, highlighting the impact of the loss on the police community.
“His colleagues and the entire policing family are devastated at the tragic loss of a wonderful, caring person,” Mr. Bush said. “Matt had the ability to talk to anyone and everyone. The morale and welfare of his friends and workmates was always his priority. He will be remembered for his selflessness, amazing sense of humour, extreme kindness and inclusion of all.”

The family of Sergeant Paton released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over his passing. They described him as a devoted husband and father to three children. “Family was the most important thing to Matt. He was dedicated to his family, including his wife of 31 years and their three children. He adored his family. And we adored him,” the statement read.
They also noted that Sergeant Paton had always wanted to travel to Peru and even learned Spanish in his mid-30s to prepare for this trip. “He was always up for an adventure and to learn something and to experience something new,” the statement added.

The Inca Trail, which stretches about 46 kilometers, is a popular trek to the ancient site of Machu Picchu. It typically takes travelers up to five days to complete and is highly sought after, with spots often booked months in advance. The trail is considered moderately difficult, featuring demanding mountainous sections and breathtaking natural scenery.

Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, sits at an elevation of 2,840 meters above sea level. It is accessible via a trail that winds through steep mountains in the Sacred Valley of Cusco. A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson confirmed that consular assistance is being provided to Sergeant Paton’s family, offering their deepest condolences during this difficult time.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” the spokesperson said. “Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”
