North Star Simpkin Shines at Sir Doug Nicholls Round

A Tribute in Footy Boots

Jy Simpkin, wearing number 36 on his boots, made a powerful statement during the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round. His performance for North Melbourne was not only crucial but also deeply personal, as it was a tribute to Phoenix Spicer, an Indigenous player who had passed away earlier this year.

Simpkin was the standout performer for the Kangaroos in the first half of the match against Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium. Despite the initial dominance of the visitors, North managed to turn the game around with a strong second-half display, eventually securing a six-point victory.

The game was more than just a contest on the field for Simpkin. He came into the season with a heavy heart, having lost the captaincy after a failed trade attempt last year. Then, on January 2, Spicer passed away due to a medical emergency. The Indigenous player had played 12 games for North before being delisted in 2023.

North coach Alastair Clarkson expressed his pride in Simpkin’s performance, highlighting the emotional significance of the day.

“That hit Jy pretty hard, as it did all our footy club. They were blood brothers, those two,” Clarkson said. “When we weren’t going so great in the first half, he was our best player. I was so proud of what he stood up for, because it was the Sir Doug Nicholls Round and for ‘Spice’, he was wearing his number on his footy boots. It just meant so much to him.”

Despite the challenges he has faced this season, Simpkin has not missed a beat. His leadership and commitment have remained unwavering, and Clarkson emphasized how vital he is to the team.

“It goes underestimated a little bit, just the burden you have when you’re a leader at the club – your club and team haven’t gone so well for a period of time,” Clarkson said. “The personal weight that burden has on any individual – in a lot of instances that’s the coach, but in a lot of instances it’s the captain.”

Clarkson also praised Simpkin for taking on some run-with midfield roles early in the season, which demonstrated his selflessness and dedication to the team.

“When he’s able to do really sacrificial roles for his team like that, it gives you a strong indication that they’re in boots and all. He’s certainly that way,” Clarkson said.

While veterans such as Simpkin, Jack Darling, and Caleb Daniel are not officially part of the player leadership group, their influence on the team remains significant. Clarkson highlighted the importance of their presence and contributions.

He also praised Darling, who kicked three goals in the match, further showcasing the depth and strength of North Melbourne’s squad.
