The Boroughs Dismissed as ‘Geriatric’ in Stranger Things

A New Sci-Fi Series with a Geriatric Twist

Netflix has launched a new sci-fi series called The Boroughs, which has been compared to Stranger Things but with a geriatric twist. The show is created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and executive produced by the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer. It features a stellar cast including Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Alfred Molina, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Alfre Woodard. These actors portray a group of misfit residents in a retirement community who come together to uncover a dark secret that reveals their “golden years” are more dangerous than they ever imagined.

The eight-episode debut was released on Thursday and has already received a 95 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. On social media platform X, it has been described as “intriguing,” while some viewers have likened it to an “oldies version of Stranger Things.” One user wrote, “The Boroughs is basically geriatric Stranger Things,” while another agreed, saying it’s “giving Stranger Things a bit but with elderly people.” They added that it was a “nice watch.”

However, not all reviews have been positive. One person criticized the show, calling it “awful.” They said, “The first 10 mins of the first episode I hated this show. It’s entirely derivative, every line from every character is delivered with the least authentic approach you could imagine.” They continued, “Each scene is bolstered by a soundtrack and editing that tries to force meaning and only manages to annoy. Do not recommend.”

Despite the mixed reactions, many viewers have praised the series. One fan wrote, “The Boroughs is so interesting! Old people lifestyle PLUS sci-fi? I am so in.” Another said, “The Boroughs is great. And I’m only on the second episode,” while a third described it as “easy good entertainment.” A fourth viewer argued that it’s “not Stranger Things.”

Positive Feedback and Future Plans

Many fans have expressed their enthusiasm for the show. One user commented, “Definitely a must-watch on Netflix,” while another praised the entire cast, saying they were “awesome.” Another viewer wrote, “The Boroughs on Netflix is the first non-reality/documentary show to catch my attention in a minute like it’s sooo cute and entertaining.” Someone else said they were “really impressed” by the show.

If the series gets renewed, co-creator Addiss has hinted at a specific three-season plan. He told IGN, “We think we know the last shot of the last scene of the last episode.” Addiss explained, “How we get there might change a little, but we have the answers to all the questions, and a plan of how and when to answer those.” He added, “We wanted season one to feel emotionally complete, but leave some questions unanswered. We really wanted [you] to feel like you got a full story, in case that’s all we get.”
