A Call for Patience and Persistence
Former NRL legend Andrew Johns has made a compelling case for the St George Illawarra Dragons to retain interim coach Dean Young for the upcoming season, despite the team’s recent struggles. The 8th Immortal highlighted that the side he took over was always going to face challenges, especially after parting ways with Shane Flanagan.
Young, who has now suffered his fourth loss as head coach, has urged the loyal Red V fans to remain supportive during this difficult period. Following the defeat against the Warriors, Young expressed his gratitude for the fans’ continued presence at the games, even in adverse weather conditions.
“I know they’re in a tough spot and we appreciate all the fans turning up tonight, where we’re sitting on the ladder and to have so many of those fans turn up, pay their hard-earned and sit in the pouring rain,” Young said. “We appreciate it, we’ve got a fan day tomorrow and all the boys are going to be thanking everyone that turns up tomorrow … stay with us, we’re building.”
A Promising Future
Despite the current setbacks, there are reasons to be optimistic about the future of the Dragons. With promising attacking threats like Scott Drinkwater and Luke Metcalf, along with the addition of Keaon Koloamatangi next year, there is a growing sense of excitement among fans.
Johns emphasized that the club should not judge Young based on the current performance. He pointed out that Young inherited a roster that lacks depth in certain positions. “He’s got Scott Drinkwater to the club and I’ve got no doubt he’s gone there because Dean Young coached him at the Cowboys,” Johns noted.
Metcalf’s arrival is expected to add a significant running threat, while Koloamatangi brings young potential to the forward pack. “Just give Dean a start next year, he needs to be given a start,” Johns added.
Building a Stronger Team
In just a few weeks, the Red V fans have a lot to look forward to next year. The club has identified a need for more attacking flair and has secured two impactful players in Metcalf and Drinkwater. Alongside these additions, the Dragons are also nurturing a strong group of elite rookie forwards, including the Couchman brothers, Hamish Stewart, Dylan Egan, and Jacob Halangahu.
This emerging nucleus in Wollongong is set to grow stronger in the coming years, providing a solid foundation for future success. The combination of experienced players and young talent suggests that the Dragons are on the right path to rebuilding and competing at a higher level.
Looking Ahead
With the right support and time, Dean Young has the opportunity to implement his vision and develop the team into a formidable force. Fans and club officials alike are encouraged to remain patient and continue backing the coaching staff as they work towards long-term goals.
The journey ahead may be challenging, but with the right mix of talent, strategy, and determination, the St George Illawarra Dragons have the potential to rise again and reclaim their place among the league’s top teams.
