Nicolas Jackson’s Future at Chelsea Hinges on Managerial Assurances
Nicolas Jackson is seeking clarity from Xabi Alonso regarding his role at Chelsea, with the Senegalese striker indicating he will only remain at Stamford Bridge if he is considered a ‘first-choice’ player under the new manager. Jackson is set to return to west London after spending the 2025-26 season on loan at Bayern Munich.
The forward was a key figure in the Chelsea squad for two seasons following his £32m move from Villarreal, netting 30 goals in 81 appearances. His departure to Bayern Munich last summer came as Chelsea spent nearly £100m on new signings, including Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.
Bayern Munich secured Jackson’s services on loan for around £14m, with an additional £56m option to sign him permanently if specific conditions were met. However, it became clear that a permanent move would not happen, and the German champions opted not to renegotiate the deal.
As a result, Jackson is expected to return to Chelsea, but his future remains uncertain, with three potential outcomes still possible.

Jackson’s Conditions for Staying at Chelsea
According to reports, Jackson is said to be ‘happy’ to stay at Chelsea, who recently appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager. However, this is conditional on regaining a place in the first team. The striker is reportedly seeking assurances from Alonso about his playing time and may consider another loan or a permanent transfer if his demands are not met.
Chelsea is planning discussions with Jackson’s representatives as they evaluate whether to sell the player, who attracted interest from several domestic and foreign clubs last summer.

Replacements and Performance Analysis
Liam Delap, one of Jackson’s replacements, struggled during his first season at Stamford Bridge, scoring just two goals across all competitions. In contrast, fellow summer signing Joao Pedro stood out, scoring 20 goals throughout the campaign.
During his loan spell at Bayern Munich, Jackson managed to score 11 goals in 34 appearances, primarily serving as a backup to England captain Harry Kane.
Paul Merson, a former footballer, has criticized Chelsea’s decision to let Jackson leave last summer and has urged Alonso to bring him back into the squad. Merson expressed his views on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, stating:
‘They need players and they need a clear-out. I would get Nicolas Jackson back, I would rip Jackson back. I’ve said it before, Palmer made Jackson and Jackson made Palmer. Palmer’s not on that plane [to the World Cup] because Jackson’s not been there. Liam Delap is out of his depth, and Joao Pedro wants to come this way [towards the midfield], and it closes everything down, he’s more of a No. 10 really.’
