Carlton’s Progress and the Road Ahead
Carlton caretaker coach Josh Fraser has acknowledged the club’s recent successes as a result of natural progression. He is looking forward to using Friday night’s match against Geelong at the MCG as an opportunity to demonstrate the Blues’ continued development.
Since Michael Voss stepped down as coach following a loss to Brisbane in round nine, Carlton has managed to secure morale-boosting victories over the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide. These wins have provided a much-needed lift for the team, especially after a challenging start to the season that saw them finish with a 1-8 record.
The Blues’ struggles in the second half of games were a key factor in their poor performance, which ultimately led to Voss’s departure. However, under Fraser’s leadership, the team has shown more resilience. Despite this, Fraser emphasizes that the recent success is not just due to changes but also the strong foundation already in place.

“I’d like to think we’ve evolved more than changed,” Fraser said. “And I guess as you evolve, there’s natural changes with what you do. But there’s been a strong foundation built, and we’ve been able to consider what that looks like moving forward.”
Fraser has made it clear that he does not intend to take on the head coaching role permanently. However, the Blues still have a chance to achieve something remarkable under his interim leadership by potentially qualifying for the AFL’s new Wildcard finals format. This allows teams as low as 10th place to make it into the finals.
Currently, Carlton sits in 15th position with a record of 3-8. A surprising victory over Geelong could bring them closer to 10th-placed Collingwood, who have a record of 5-5-1.
Geelong, on the other hand, is in excellent form with a four-game winning streak. They recently defeated Sydney by 27 points, showing their confidence and strength.

“Over a long period of time, they’ve arguably been the benchmark of the competition,” Fraser said of the Cats. “So Friday night presents a great challenge for us to put our brand of football on show and stay connected against a team that can do different things to you.”
Carlton has received a boost with the return of star defender Jacob Weitering. Additionally, Blake Acres will replace Matthew Carroll, who suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Geelong will welcome back Tanner Bruhn, while Jack Martin will be rested for the match.
Key Players and Team Dynamics
- Jacob Weitering – Star defender returns to bolster the defense.
- Blake Acres – Steps in for Matthew Carroll, who has been ruled out for the season.
- Tanner Bruhn – Returns to Geelong’s lineup, replacing the rested Jack Martin.
These changes highlight the importance of adaptability and depth in both teams as they prepare for a crucial match. The outcome of this game could significantly impact the standings and future prospects for both Carlton and Geelong.
