Hungarian Filmmaker Explores Beauty and Science

A Ginkgo Tree as a Symbol of Connection

In the heart of a university’s botanical garden, a solitary ginkgo tree stands quietly, witnessing the passage of time and the evolving stories of those who seek connection. This tree becomes a central symbol in the film Silent Friend, which recently opened in US theaters. The movie, which won acclaim at last year’s Venice Film Festival, explores themes of curiosity, discovery, and the enduring human need for communication.

Directed by Ildiko Enyedi, the film highlights the beauty of scientific inquiry and the importance of academic freedom in an era where such values are increasingly under scrutiny. “I found it important to show the beauty of curiosity and the beauty of scientific research,” Enyedi explained. “It is a unique and beautiful trait of humankind that I thought it would be nice to showcase in a film.”

Three Stories Across Time

The narrative weaves together three distinct stories set across different decades on a German campus. Each story reflects the challenges and triumphs of its characters as they navigate their respective eras.

  • 1908: Grete (Luna Wedler) becomes the first woman admitted to the university, facing the harsh realities of sexism in academia. Her journey is one of resilience and determination.

  • 1972: Hannes (Enzo Brumm), a student from the countryside, struggles to adapt to the rebellious energy of the campus. His experience highlights the cultural shifts of the time.

  • 2020: A neuroscientist (Tony Leung) finds himself isolated during the pandemic, relying on an employee who speaks a different language. This storyline underscores the challenges of communication and connection in a world defined by barriers.

Despite the differences in time and context, each character is drawn to the ginkgo tree, finding solace and inspiration in its quiet presence.

Evolution of Perception

Enyedi also emphasizes how the film illustrates the changing perceptions of gender over time. From a student who fights for admission to a woman striving to be recognized in a more open environment, and finally to an academic who leads her field, the stories reflect the progress made in women’s roles in society.

“The 20th century was a century of women, where their position in society changed significantly,” Enyedi noted. “It was a good opportunity to showcase this transformation.”

The Power of Communication

At the core of Silent Friend is the theme of human connection. The film explores the barriers that can hinder communication, whether due to personal differences or language. When the protagonists find themselves unable to connect with others, they turn to nature for solace.

Through the film’s sound design, nature itself becomes a voice in the narrative, offering a form of communication that transcends words. “It is not by chance that I included linguistic obstacles between some characters,” Enyedi said. “It speaks to the desire for communication, the difficulty of it, and the beauty when it happens.”

A Universal Message

Enyedi insists that the fundamental need for connection lies at the heart of the human experience. She believes that the film captures the passion for discovering the world and the importance of shifting perspectives to uncover new insights.

As the film continues to resonate with audiences, it serves as a reminder of the enduring power of curiosity, the value of scientific inquiry, and the timeless quest for connection.

Where to Watch

Silent Friend is now showing in select US cinemas, offering viewers a chance to experience its thoughtful exploration of history, science, and the human spirit.
