Kia has officially decided to pause the development of two potential new models, a compact electric vehicle and a new SUV. This decision comes after months of speculation about the brand’s plans to expand its lineup with additional models.
One of the most anticipated models was a smaller electric SUV that would sit below the Kia EV2. Many had hoped this model could be a twin to the Hyundai Inster, but it now seems unlikely that such a model will be introduced in the near future. This also means that the possibility of an SUV version of the Kia Tasman, which would follow the trend of ute-based SUVs, is no longer on the table.
Focus on Current Models
Spencer Cho, Senior Vice President and Head of the Global Business Planning Subdivision at Kia, confirmed that the brand is not planning to add any new model lines in the near future. He stated that Kia’s current lineup is already “big enough,” and the focus should instead be on improving existing models and enhancing their competitiveness.
Cho explained that the brand is currently working on options for the 2026 Kia Tasman, including various powertrain configurations. However, he emphasized that the priority is to refine and enhance what is already available rather than introducing entirely new models.
“We are not satisfied yet,” Cho said. “We are not giving up on the 2026 Kia Tasman, and all power options are still on the table.”
EV Lineup Expansion
Cho also mentioned that Kia is focused on its electric vehicle (EV) lineup, which he described as being “close to the full range.” While there have been discussions about a smaller EV model, possibly called the Kia EV1, Cho clarified that the brand’s current EV models are the main priority.
“We will consider any opportunities for new segments, but at this moment, we are very much focused on the EV line-up we have right now,” he said. “We recently launched the EV2 in the European market, and the EV3 is one of our global success models.”
Kia currently has a range of EV models, from the EV2 through to the EV9. Cho noted that the chances of introducing models beyond the current range—either smaller or larger—are slim. He added that the brand is open to developing new products if there is a clear market demand, but for now, the emphasis remains on what is already available.

Market Considerations
Cho also highlighted that the target market for a vehicle smaller than the EV2 is not significantly larger than the global market. As a result, the likelihood of introducing a model like the EV1 is low. He reiterated that Kia will continue to monitor the marketplace for potential opportunities, but for now, the focus is on the existing BEV models.
“We will keep an eye on any opportunities in the marketplace, smaller than EV2, but probably the chances are quite less, because the EV1 or whatever, smaller than the EV2 target market is not that much bigger than the global market.”
Conclusion
With the decision to pause the development of new models, Kia is shifting its strategy towards refining and improving its current lineup. This includes focusing on the 2026 Kia Tasman and expanding its EV offerings. While the prospect of new models like the EV1 or a Tasman-based SUV may still exist in the future, for now, the brand is concentrating on what it already has.

This approach aligns with Kia’s broader goal of maintaining a strong and competitive presence in the automotive market. By prioritizing product improvement over expansion, the brand aims to deliver better value and performance to its customers.
