Volkswagen’s sporty Cupra brand has announced that its new Tindaya electric SUV concept is set to become a reality in the near future. While there has been no official confirmation yet regarding the mid-size SUV’s potential availability in Australia, it would mark another significant addition to Cupra’s expanding electric vehicle (EV) lineup in the region.
The Tindaya would directly compete with models such as the BMW iX3 and the upcoming Volvo EX60, both of which are expected to launch later this year. This development highlights the growing competition in the Australian EV market, where brands are continuously introducing new models to meet rising consumer demand for sustainable transportation.
Cupra Australia has not yet responded to inquiries about whether the Tindaya will be available in the country. However, production of the Tindaya was confirmed by Cupra Chief Executive Officer Markus Haupt during an overseas interview.
“It looks fantastic — why should we not build the Tindaya?” Haupt said in an interview with AutoCar. “We are indeed looking at our plans for when we could build the Tindaya, but it’s something I can promise: this car will see the streets in some years.”

The Tindaya was first introduced as a sporty SUV concept in September 2025, showcasing a sharply-creased body and a distinctive sloping roofline. This latest update confirms that the car will go into production and be made available for sale, although specific technical details remain limited.
The Tindaya will be built on Volkswagen Group’s new EV-specific SSP platform, which will serve as the foundation for many of the group’s future electric vehicles. It has been reported that the Tindaya may come in both fully-electric and range-extender variants, offering substantial driving ranges.

Haupt did not confirm the exact powertrains that will be used for the Tindaya, stating that the decision is still under consideration. According to the CEO, the final choice will depend on what is already available within the Volkswagen Group.
“But which powertrains will we have in the end? It’s a decision we have not taken now, and we want to stay flexible as long as possible, because when the car hits the streets, we need to ensure that it has the right powertrains for our markets, for our customers,” Haupt explained.
The Tindaya concept measures 4.72 meters in length, making it the largest vehicle in Cupra’s current lineup. It will complement the smaller Tavascan electric mid-size SUV. The Tindaya is expected to be the brand’s fourth fully-electric model on sale, following the budget-focused Raval, which is set to arrive in Australia next year.
