“Small steps matter”: Socceroos squad cut nears

The Socceroos’ Final Test: A Battle for World Cup Spots

As the Socceroos prepare for their match against Mexico at the iconic Rose Bowl, one thing is clear — not every player will make the final cut. With 29 players in the squad and only 26 spots available, the pressure is on for those vying for a place in the World Cup team.

Australia has left their pre-World Cup training camp in Sarasota, Florida, to embark on a journey that will see them face El Tri at the Pasadena stadium, a venue with a rich history of hosting major football events. This game serves as a crucial audition for the players, as coach Tony Popovic finalizes his squad ahead of the FIFA deadline on June 1.

Archie Thompson, a former Socceroos star, understands the stakes. He recalls his own experiences from the 2006 World Cup, where he was competing under Guus Hiddink but ultimately didn’t get a chance to play. “Every little bit of what you’ve got can improve and maybe change his mind,” Thompson said, reflecting on the intense pressure players face.

He emphasized the nerves that come with representing Australia in high-stakes matches. “Even putting on an Australian jersey for World Cup qualifiers, or even just friendlies are always nerve-wracking, because you want to be performing all the time, but this one just has a bit more carrot to it.”

Thompson also highlighted the importance of each performance. “Because sometimes it takes a couple of games before you maybe feel comfortable, or your performances are good, but you’ve only had one audition and every little pass and every little thing counts.”

Key Players in the Running

Several players are currently in contention for defensive spots, including Jason Geria, Milos Degenek, Kai Trewin, and teenager Lucas Herrington. Forward Nishan Velupillay is another name on the radar, with some questioning his inclusion but others recognizing his consistent performances under previous coach Ange Postecoglou.

Injuries have affected several players, with Riley McGree, Lewis Miller, Patrick Yazbek, Nicholas D’Agostino, and Hayden Matthews ruled out. Mitch Duke, Alex Robertson, and Anthony Caceres were also recently cut from the squad.

Goalkeeper Maty Ryan is the clear No.1, while Paul Izzo is likely to be the backup. One of Patrick Beach or Joe Gauci appears to be in danger of missing out. Aiden O’Neill’s fitness after an ankle injury could influence whether Hearts midfielder Cammy Devlin makes the cut.

Mathew Leckie’s late-season form has seen him rise in the rankings, along with Harry Souttar’s return to fitness. Even new call-up Tete Yengi could emerge as a surprise option at striker.

The Coach’s Vision

Thompson believes that Popovic has a clear idea of the core players he wants, but the fringe players will need to prove they can adapt to his style. “Popa knows or has an idea about the core of what he wants and then obviously it’ll be the fringe players and whether they can mould into what he wants — and maybe there’s something that he’s missing, or at least a backup,” he said.

The pressure is immense for every player involved. “Every training session’s intense because you’re afraid as it is to make mistakes, but then the mistakes are a little bit more in terms of you have the ambition of going to a World Cup.”
