Swans reset ahead of Tigers showdown

Sydney Swans Focus on Recovery Ahead of Crucial Clash

The Sydney Swans, currently facing a series of injuries, are focusing on their recovery and preparation for their upcoming match against the Richmond Tigers at the SCG. Despite the Tigers being in the second-last position on the AFL ladder, the Swans are taking the game seriously, aware that they must not underestimate their opponents.

The home game against the Tigers may seem straightforward on paper, but the Swans are still dealing with the aftermath of a 27-point loss to Geelong. This defeat ended their seven-game winning streak, and it came at a cost as key forwards Tom Papley and Malcolm Rosas Jnr suffered injuries during the match. Papley is dealing with a calf injury, while Rosas Jnr has an ankle issue.

Additionally, Sydney captain Callum Mills has not been able to prove his fitness due to a calf injury, and ruckman Brodie Grundy has been managed carefully. These setbacks have left the team in a challenging position, but they remain determined to bounce back.

Injury Challenges for Both Teams

Richmond, too, is facing its own set of injury challenges. The Tigers are missing several key players, including Tom Lynch, who is out with a throat injury, Jonty Faull with a concussion, and Tom Burton, who has been omitted from the lineup. However, there are positive signs as veteran midfielder Dion Prestia returns after recovering from a calf injury, and young defender Sam Banks comes back from a collarbone injury. Liam Fawcett has also been recalled to the squad.

Despite these challenges, the Tigers are looking to build on their recent performance, where they secured an 18-point victory over Essendon in the ‘Dreamtime at the ‘G’ game. They are eager to continue their momentum and show that they can compete at a high level.

Preparing for the Match

Sydney recruit Jai Serong emphasized that the team is not taking anything for granted. He acknowledged that the Swans are not a finished product, even though they had led the league for eight weeks before round 11. “A lot of (the review of the Geelong game) was around our effort and our work not being up to scratch,” Serong said. “You’re just going to get punished if you don’t get that going.”

The Swans are making several changes to their lineup, with Peter Ladhams set to make his first AFL appearance of the season as a back-up ruck. Teenager Harry Kyle will also make his debut in defense, while Harry Cunningham and Hayden McLean return to the line-up.

Serong highlighted the need for the team to focus on improving their performance. “We’re under no illusions, the last month has not been to the standard that we expect. We’ve been able to get some wins along the way, but we know our game’s not the finished product. We’ll get back to the drawing board.”

Historical Context and Team Dynamics

Richmond’s trip to the SCG will be their first since 2022, marking only their third visit to the ground in a decade. The Swans previously secured a six-point win in 2022, following a dominant 113-point victory in 2016. These historical results add pressure to the current match, but Serong remains focused on the present.

Well-acquainted with the SCG crowd after moving from Hawthorn last season, Serong does not believe in any home advantage. “Richmond are strong in the contest and their pressure is good – a smaller ground could suit them in that way,” he said. “They’re going to be hungry. They’re going to want to hunt. When young groups get up and about and the pressure, and their contest gets up, it can get their tails up for sure.”
