Key Details of Murray Taulagi’s Contract Situation
North Queensland Cowboys’ outside back, Murray Taulagi, has seen his contract offer from the club withdrawn, marking a significant development in his career. The winger, who has been linked with an exit from the team recently, was in discussions about a new deal. However, this latest move indicates that he may be heading towards a different path.
Taulagi is set to return from concussion this weekend, aiming to bolster his case for a State of Origin recall in Game 2 of this year’s series. His potential departure from the Cowboys has been widely speculated, especially given that his current contract expires this year. Since November 1, he has been able to negotiate with rival clubs, and the recent double signing of Cronulla Sharks’ winger Sione Katoa and centre Jesse Ramien by the Cowboys has only added fuel to the speculation about his exit.
Potential Move to the Sydney Roosters
News Corp reports that Taulagi’s deal with the Cowboys has been terminated, signaling a likely departure from the club at the end of the year. It is understood that the Cowboys had offered a two-year contract, but the 27-year-old is now almost certain to join the Sydney Roosters. The Cowboys are believed to have grown tired of waiting for an answer from Taulagi’s camp.
Taulagi made his debut with the Cowboys in 2019, scoring 70 tries in 115 games for the club. His move to the Roosters could significantly enhance their backline for 2027. The tri-colours are also set to welcome Reuben Garrick from the Manly Sea Eagles, who was one of the first players to confirm a club switch after November 1.
Impact on the Roosters’ Backline
The versatile backline star is expected to shift into the centres if Taulagi signs with the Roosters. Daniel Tupou is also set to continue for another year, potentially resulting in a strong back five consisting of James Tedesco, Murray Taulagi, Reuben Garrick, Robert Toia, and Daniel Tupou.
Trent Robinson’s side, already known for its strong attacking capabilities, is not only awaiting Taulagi’s decision but is also considering the future of Daly Cherry-Evans, who could retire at the end of 2026. This potential change in the Roosters’ lineup could have a significant impact on their performance in the upcoming season.
