French Open shaken by ‘horrible’ incident as Djokovic and De Minaur collapse

French Open Faces Backlash Over Advertising Signs on Court

Tennis players around the world are once again demanding that the French Open organizers take action against the outdated practice of placing advertising signs on the court. This comes after Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez suffered an injury when she tripped over one of these signs and had to retire from her match. The incident has sparked a wave of criticism, with many calling for immediate changes to ensure player safety.

The day was marked by several dramatic moments, including the unexpected exits of two top players, Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur. Both were unable to capitalize on Jannik Sinner’s surprising loss in the second round. De Minaur had been seen as a strong contender, especially after Sinner’s exit, and with Carlos Alcaraz also missing due to injury, there was hope that the Australian could finally achieve a breakthrough at a grand slam.

De Minaur received a walkover into the third round, and his opponent Jakub Mensik had just completed a grueling five-set match that left him needing a wheelchair at the end. However, this opportunity did not translate into success. De Minaur lost the match 6-0 2-6 2-6 3-6, despite a dominant first set. His performance in the following sets was inconsistent, and he made a series of errors that ultimately led to his defeat. He even smashed his racquet in frustration during the match.

De Minaur had been expected to face Djokovic in the quarterfinals if both players advanced. However, both players crashed out within an hour of each other on Friday. Joao Fonseca, a 19-year-old Brazilian player, delivered a stunning comeback to defeat Djokovic in a thrilling five-hour match. This victory made Fonseca the first teenager in history to beat Djokovic at a grand slam. He is also the second player to defeat Djokovic from two sets down, and the first in 16 years. This result brought Djokovic’s record to 289-2 after being two sets up.

The day was also marred by another alarming incident involving Zeynep Sonmez. She had to withdraw from her doubles match after tripping on an advertising sign placed on the court. Sonmez required stitches for her knee and could not continue the match. This incident added to the growing list of concerns about the placement of these signs on the court.

Katie Boulter had a similar near-miss the day before, and she expressed her frustration on social media, stating, “THESE THINGS HAVE TO GO. Got lucky last night but next time I might not be…” Sonmez echoed these sentiments, saying, “I stand with Katie. 5 incidents in 5 days. I left the court with 2 stitches and a bruised knee. Thankfully, it wasn’t worse. Do we really have to wait until a player is seriously injured before these court-side boards are removed? Player safety must come first.”

Fans and commentators took to social media to express their outrage, calling the incident “horrible” and “ridiculous.” One user wrote, “Those advertising objects should be made illegal. A player can easily suffer a career-ending injury because of them.”

This is not the first time such issues have arisen at the French Open. Earlier in the tournament, Alexander Blockx had to withdraw after injuring his ankle on a cover placed at the back of a practice court. In 2017, David Goffin had to withdraw from a match after slipping on a tarp. Despite these incidents, no significant changes have been made to improve player safety in the past nine years.

As the debate over the placement of advertising signs continues, the tennis community is urging the French Open organizers to prioritize player safety and take immediate action to remove these hazards from the court.
