Laurie Daley unveils Blayke Brailey’s successor plan

Laurie Daley Confirms Three Players in Contention for Blayke Brailey’s Replacement

Laurie Daley, the head coach of the New South Wales Blues, has confirmed that three players are in the running to replace Cronulla Sharks’ dummy half Blayke Brailey for the second game of the State of Origin series. Brailey suffered a broken arm during the first match on Friday night, which will see him undergo surgery and miss Game 2. However, there is optimism that the in-form player could return for Game 3 in Brisbane.

Wayde Egan, Apisai Koroisau, and Connor Watson have been named as the three candidates for the role. These players are now competing for a spot on the bench ahead of the team’s trip to Melbourne. Daley emphasized that form will be a key factor in the selection process.

“All three of those guys will be in the conversation,” Daley said. “Whoever can play well between now and when we select the side may well find themselves on that bench. For us, it’s very important. We saw the impact of Blayke. If you get momentum in today’s game from dummy half and put pressure on the opposition, that was a real strength. There is an opportunity there for someone if they play well in the next couple of weeks.”

The Candidates

Connor Watson was initially considered a strong contender for the bench in Game 1 due to his versatility. However, he was unexpectedly overlooked, despite being a versatile option. Apisai Koroisau, who has prior Origin experience, is also seen as a strong candidate. He has been performing well for the Wests Tigers, making him a top favorite for the position.

Wayde Egan is the only uncapped player among the three. Although he was part of discussions last year due to his strong form with the Warriors, he hasn’t yet secured a spot in the representative team. It was reported that Egan was in the mix for Game 1, with instructions to pack extra clothes for the magic round, but he ultimately missed out.

Koroisau remains the favorite, but his inclusion is not guaranteed. Daley will make a final decision on the replacement for Brailey, as well as any other changes to the team for Game 2, after one full round and the remaining games this weekend.

Key Players Expected to Return

Both Payne Haas and Mitchell Moses are expected to be fit for Game 2, adding further depth to the squad. This means that Daley has several options to consider as he prepares for the upcoming match.

The selection process is crucial for the Blues, as the dummy half position plays a vital role in the team’s strategy. With Brailey’s injury, the coaching staff must ensure that the right player is chosen to maintain the momentum that Brailey brought to the team.

As the team continues to prepare for the next match, all eyes will be on the three candidates vying for the bench spot. Their performance in the coming weeks will determine who gets the chance to step into Brailey’s shoes and help the Blues secure a victory in Game 2.
