John McClain, a veteran music executive and long-standing co-executor of Michael Jackson’s estate, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, at the age of 71. A representative confirmed he died in Malibu, California, after battling a health illness for several years.
McClain was named as a co-executor in the late superstar’s 2002 will. He later partnered with attorney John Branca in 2009, working together to erase hundreds of millions of dollars in debt and build a multibillion-dollar global empire. His efforts were instrumental in managing and expanding the legacy of one of the most iconic figures in music history.
One of his most significant contributions was spearheading posthumous ventures, including the documentary “This Is It,” the Broadway musical “MJ The Musical,” Cirque du Soleil productions, and the box-office hit biopic “Michael.” Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Michael’s nephew Jaafar as the King of Pop, the film became an unprecedented commercial success, surpassing previous records set by “Bohemian Rhapsody” as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
McClain also played a key role in producing several of Jackson’s posthumous tracks, such as “Love Never Felt So Good” and “Much Too Soon.” These projects helped keep the King of Pop’s legacy alive and introduced his music to new generations.
Before managing the estate, McClain had a distinguished career as an A&R executive at A&M Records. He was known for guiding Janet Jackson’s breakthrough album “Control” and working with legendary hip-hop figures like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. He also helped launch the careers of fresh talent, including Mark Wahlberg’s group, Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch.
Despite his high-profile role, McClain was known for being fiercely private and preferring to work behind the scenes. His passing marks the quiet loss of one of the chief architects of modern pop music history.

The news of McClain’s death was initially reported by TMZ, noting that while he had been ill for a long time, it is not yet officially confirmed if the illness directly caused his death. His sudden passing has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing legal battles surrounding Michael Jackson’s estate.
Michael’s daughter, Paris Jackson, 28, is currently involved in an intense, multimillion-dollar legal battle against Branca and McClain. She has filed legal objections accusing them of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, and using the multibillion-dollar empire to enrich themselves. Her team has publicly criticized the men for allegedly leaving $464 million uninvested and running the estate like a “slush fund.”

The legal feud escalated significantly following a major court victory for Paris and the sudden passing of McClain. In a ruling handed down by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, the court sided with the King of Pop’s daughter. The judge ordered the two men to return $625,000 in unapproved bonus payments they had disbursed to third-party law firms in 2018.
Following her win, Paris filed a follow-up procedural motion demanding an additional $463,752 from the executors to cover the interest accrued on the misappropriated funds. This development highlights the ongoing challenges and controversies surrounding the management of Michael Jackson’s vast estate.

The situation has sparked widespread public interest and debate about how the estate is being managed. Fans and critics alike have expressed concern over the transparency and accountability of those overseeing the legacy of one of the greatest entertainers of all time.
