Essendon dealt major blow as second top name pulls out of coaching race

Essendon’s Coaching Search Faces New Challenges

The Essendon Football Club is currently in the midst of a significant coaching search, with several high-profile names stepping back from the race. Among them is former West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson, who has joined Ken Hinkley in ruling himself out of contention for the vacant head coaching position. This development comes as reports suggest that Bombers legend Kevin Sheedy is leading efforts to bring James Hird back as the club’s head coach following the sacking of Brad Scott earlier this week.

Dean Solomon, a premiership-winning player for Essendon, has taken on the role of caretaker coach for the remainder of the season. However, he has made it clear that he will not be pursuing the full-time position this season. Solomon emphasized his commitment to guiding the club through a challenging period, during which they are currently sitting at the bottom of the AFL ladder.

“I’ve got to knuckle down. That’s where I’ll sit with it for the rest of the season,” Solomon said when speaking to reporters about the vacant head coaching post. “It’s the wrong thing to do to entertain any thoughts around that.”

Essendon’s search for Scott’s successor has been complicated by the situation surrounding Hird. Hird expressed this week that he would love to return as the club’s coach if the management sees him as the right fit. There is already a strong wave of support for Hird to make a comeback, and former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has stated that he has no interest in competing against the club legend for the role.

Veteran Coaches Voice Concerns About Essendon’s Coaching Process

Hinkley highlighted the need for Essendon to clarify its stance on Hird before engaging with other potential candidates. “I think it’s really clear, Essendon now have to decide before anything else, before they ask any other person, they have to decide whether James Hird is going to be their coach,” Hinkley said on SEN radio.

Like Hinkley, Simpson is also available and has been linked with the Essendon job. However, he has ruled himself out of the race, citing a similar situation he faced in 2014 when he missed out on the Brisbane coaching job. At that time, the Lions appointed club great Justin Leppitsch instead.

“And this feels ten times that,” Simpson said on AFL 360. “From my point of view, it’s snowballed to the point where there needs to be a decision made (by Essendon). What are they doing? (It feels like) it would be a one-man process… I can’t see anyone going for this job until they get that sorted. I think Ken (Hinkley) nailed that today.”

AFL 360 host Gerard Whateley agreed that other top coaching candidates would likely avoid going up against Hird for the Essendon job. However, former Sydney Swans coach John Longmire denied that the Bombers’ hiring process had become “compromised” and urged critics to wait and see how things unfold before making judgments.

Key Points in Essendon’s Coaching Dilemma

  • The Essendon Football Club is searching for a new head coach after the sacking of Brad Scott.
  • Dean Solomon has taken on the role of caretaker coach for the remainder of the season but is not seeking the full-time position.
  • James Hird is seen as a strong candidate for the role, with support from key figures like Kevin Sheedy.
  • Ken Hinkley and Adam Simpson have both ruled themselves out of the race, citing concerns over the current situation.
  • Other potential coaching candidates may be hesitant to pursue the role until Essendon clarifies its stance on Hird.
  • Some coaches believe the process could be compromised, while others urge patience and a focus on the final outcome.
