A Personal Journey to Better Health
Karl Stefanovic, a well-known host on Today, has recently shared the deeply personal reason behind his significant weight loss of 15 kilograms – his youngest daughter, Harper. At 51 years old, the father of four opened up about his health journey and the moment that motivated him to make a change.
In an episode of his podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show, he spoke with men’s health expert Dr Alex Tatum. “I’ve got a five-year-old daughter, she turns six in a couple of days,” he said. “I was on a one-way ticket to a heart attack. I’m telling you right now.”
Stefanovic revealed that two years ago, at age 49, he was at his heaviest. He decided to seek help from his doctor. “I was really, really overweight, like 15 kilos heavier than I am now,” he confessed. He explained that this not only affected his physical health but also his mental health.
“I went to the doctor, and the doctor said, you know… essentially you’re unhealthy,” he added. Despite being physically active, he struggled to lose the weight. “I couldn’t budge it,” he admitted. Instead, he felt like he was “aging disgracefully.”
As someone who fronts a national breakfast program every morning, he became his own worst critic. “I was racking my brain and my self-confidence suffered. And I think a lot of guys go through that,” he admitted. He even joked about some of the photos of himself coming out of the surf, saying, “It’s like f–king help, get your s–t together man.”
Motivated to be the best version of himself for his wife and kids, the host decided to use weight loss medication to “kickstart” his journey. Now that he’s made progress, he doesn’t want to stop. “I don’t want to stop on this train, on this health train, cutting back on alcohol, watching what I eat,” he said on his podcast.
He is hitting the gym two or three times a week and going for walks. “It’s changed my life!” he exclaimed. The star can see the results too, as he shared his latest podcast episode on Instagram. “There’s nothing that can prepare you for looking in the mirror at 50 years of age and going actually, you know what, you look good now and you feel good from the inside out.”

Stefanovic’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of taking control of one’s health for the sake of loved ones. His journey shows that with determination and support, positive changes are possible. Whether it’s through exercise, diet, or medical assistance, there are multiple ways to achieve better health. For many, the motivation comes from a desire to be present and healthy for their families, just like Karl Stefanovic.
