Strategic Reintegration of Shimron Hetmyer
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has taken a significant step in its preparation for the upcoming 50-over World Cup by reintegrating Shimron Hetmyer into the 15-player squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. The southpaw, who is 29 years old, has been named as part of the team, marking a notable return to the format.
Hetmyer’s inclusion comes as a reward for his outstanding performance during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in the Indian subcontinent. As the captain of the 2016 U19 World Cup-winning team, he showcased his talent by finishing as the leading run-scorer for the Men in Maroon. Over seven innings, he accumulated 248 runs with an impressive average of 41.33 and a strike rate of 186.46. This included two half-centuries, which played a crucial role in helping the West Indies reach the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
A CWI press release stated:
“Following his impressive performances during the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Shimron Hetmyer has been reintegrated into the West Indies ODI setup as part of CWI’s strategic build-up towards the 50-Over World Cup in October and November next year. He will join the squad ahead of the third and final encounter.”
Return of Key Players
In addition to Hetmyer, pacer Alazarri Joseph has made a return to the ODI squad after missing a significant portion of international action due to a back injury sustained in July of last year. His presence is expected to add depth to the bowling attack.
Another key player making a comeback is slow left-arm orthodox bowler Gudakesh Motie, who missed the away series in New Zealand in November last year. His return is a positive development for the team as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
Squad Changes and Implications
Alick Athanaze, Johann Layne, Khary Pierre, and Romario Shepherd, who were part of the previous ODI series against New Zealand, have been omitted from the current squad. This decision reflects the team’s focus on building a strong lineup that can perform consistently in the upcoming matches.
The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka will be held at the Sabina Park in Jamaica from June 3 to June 8. This series holds immense importance for the West Indies as they aim to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The top eight teams, along with the hosts, will automatically qualify for the tournament, making every match a critical opportunity for the team to showcase their strength.
