From Surgery to the Startline: Jess Fox’s Health Journey and Remarkable Comeback

Jess Fox’s Remarkable Return to the Podium

Jess Fox has made a triumphant return to the World Cup podium, just nine months after undergoing surgery to remove a tumour from her kidney. The 31-year-old athlete finished in second place in the women’s K1 final at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup in Tacen, Slovenia, narrowly missing out on first place by just 0.13 seconds. This marked her first race back since the operation in August of last year, which took place just weeks after she secured double gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Jess publicly announced her surgery at the time, explaining that it would mean missing the final events of the 2025 World Cup season while she focused on recovery. The tumour was benign, and the procedure was successful, but it still required a significant period away from competition. In a candid statement at the time, Jess said, “Just a couple of gnarly new scars, a bit less kidney, and a whole lot more toughness.”

Over the following months, Jess worked gradually to rebuild her strength and fitness, relying heavily on her coaches, medical support team, and family. The journey was not always easy, but she remained committed to her goals. Ahead of her return to competition, she reflected honestly on the experience, describing it as a time filled with “countless moments of doubt, gratitude, and growth.” She acknowledged that the recovery process demanded as much mentally and emotionally as it did physically. “It hasn’t been the perfect preparation,” she wrote. “But it’s been real, and it’s been about showing up with what I’ve got.”

Back in Europe and racing again, Jess admits she is still managing some minor physical niggles, and her form is a work in progress. However, her performance in Tacen suggested she is on the right path.

“This is probably the first time a silver medal has felt like a gold medal to me,” she said after the race. “Just getting to the start line today was the biggest challenge. To put down two solid runs and make the final made me really happy – then to back it up with another good run in the final feels amazing.”

Jess is now focusing on building towards the World Championships later this year. She says she is taking the comeback one step at a time, determined to continue proving her resilience and dedication to the sport. Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the power of perseverance and the importance of mental and physical strength in overcoming adversity.
