The birthday celebrations took place as her Netflix documentary, Kylie, which was released on Wednesday, May 20, gained attention. In the documentary, Minogue opened up about her second cancer diagnosis. She received the news in early 2021, nearly two decades after her first battle with the disease.
In the film, Minogue explained why she chose to keep this diagnosis private. “I was able to keep that to myself … Not like the first time,” she said. During her first diagnosis in 2005, she faced a highly publicized battle with early-stage breast cancer, which led her to postpone a tour and undergo IVF treatments. She was declared cancer-free in 2006.
After her second diagnosis, Minogue opted for privacy. “I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually, I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person,” she shared. She admitted to experiencing significant emotional turmoil and found it difficult to leave her home. However, her career saw a resurgence with the release of the song “Padam Padam,” which helped her regain some stability.
Minogue rose to fame in 1986 on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. She transitioned into a music career with the release of her 1988 album Kylie, which included the hit “The Loco-Motion.” Over the years, she has won two Grammys and released 17 albums.
