‘Unseen before’: Origin claim shocks

A New Chapter for the Clearys in the NRL

The ongoing discussion about Nathan Cleary’s performance in State of Origin has not swayed his father, Ivan Cleary, who remains focused on the broader picture. As the Penrith Panthers prepare for a high-stakes match against the Wests Tigers, Nathan is set to be joined by fellow NSW representatives Isaah Yeo and Brian To’o, marking a strong return for the team’s key players.

Nathan Cleary has long been a standout in the NRL, with four premierships and two Clive Churchill Medals under his belt. His dominance in club football has often raised questions about whether he can translate that success into representative matches. However, after a 50% winning record for the Blues following a strong second half in the opening game of the series, it seems the debate around his Origin performance is shifting.

In the recent match, the NSW halfback showcased his skills with a try, a 40/20 kick, and two tries set up off kicks, including James Tedesco’s crucial score in the final moments. Cleary’s conversion sealed a dramatic 22-20 victory, a moment that was witnessed proudly by his father from the stands at Accor Stadium.

Ivan Cleary, while acknowledging his son’s achievements, remains grounded. He noted that Nathan has continually improved over the years, with some games where he felt he could have performed even better. “I don’t even know what dominating Origin is because we’ve never seen anyone do it,” he said. “Even Wally Lewis back in the day, he’s probably the only one who really (went close) but did he? I don’t know.”

For Ivan, the focus is on Nathan’s dedication and effort. “I’m just so proud of him that he’s in there for a start and that he prepares as hard as he can and plays as hard as he can. He did well last week, but it’ll all be on again in a couple of weeks.”

Nathan missed the previous game against the Warriors, but he is expected to return this weekend alongside some of his NSW teammates, who were rested in the last match. Liam Martin, who had been sidelined due to a knee injury, made a return in the game against the Warriors. Though his first stint was quiet, he showed promise in the second half, providing valuable support.

When asked if Martin should be considered for Origin II, Ivan remained cautious. “I’m not sure,” he replied. “He’s obviously been there a lot and understands that arena, but it’s hard to say based on what he’s just done. I’m sure he wouldn’t let anyone down.”

Martin’s season has been marked by inconsistency, but his return to play has been a positive sign. “It’s been a real stop-start year for him, so I think he’s just happy to get back out there. I thought the second stint where he came back on, he was looking pretty free, so he’ll only get better.”

Looking ahead, Cleary is eager for the upcoming clash against the Wests Tigers. The team, which he coached for two seasons, has shown significant improvement throughout the year. With stars like Api Koroisau and Jahream Bula returning to form, the Tigers are a high-energy side that presents a tough challenge.

“They’re a high-energy team who look pretty connected. When they’ve got it going, they’re a real handful, so it should be a really good game,” Cleary said. This match promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams bringing their best to the field.
