Daley Dumps Strange as Slater Calls Walsh After Titans’ Shock Win

Key Changes in the State of Origin Squads

The recent announcement of the State of Origin squads for Game II has sparked a lot of discussion among rugby league fans and experts. Both New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland have made significant changes ahead of the June 17 showdown at the MCG.

Laurie Daley, the NSW coach, has handed the number six jersey to Mitchell Moses despite Ethan Strange’s impressive debut in the opening game. Strange, who played a crucial role in the Blues’ 22-20 victory, will now be relegated to the replacements. This decision has raised questions about the rationale behind the move, with some critics arguing that it disrupts a successful halves combination.

On the other hand, Queensland coach Billy Slater has made a surprising recall by bringing Reece Walsh back into the squad. Despite a difficult weekend that included defensive lapses and a heated on-field exchange with a teammate, Walsh’s attacking prowess has earned him another chance. His performance against the Gold Coast was far from ideal, with several critical moments that drew criticism from fans.

Debate Over Coaching Decisions

The decision to bring in Mitchell Moses has sparked debate across the rugby league community. Former NRL winger Denan Kemp questioned why NSW would move away from a successful halves combination. He pointed out that while Moses is a talented player, he is playing out of position, taking the spot of a genuine number six.

Kemp also rejected the suggestion that Moses is needed to take pressure off Nathan Cleary. He emphasized that Cleary is a four-time Premiership-winning player who doesn’t need help running the team. Instead, he believes that the team needs a number six who can accentuate what Cleary does.

Despite the criticism, Daley is expected to back Moses’ experience as the Blues attempt to secure the series. There are also expected to be changes in the forwards, with Payne Haas set to return to the starting side and Addin Fonua-Blake shifting to the bench.

Queensland’s Squad Adjustments

Queensland’s biggest talking point centers around Walsh. The Broncos star was overlooked for the opening game but has now returned to the Maroons squad after Kalyn Ponga’s injury concerns and a reshuffle to Slater’s side. Despite the criticism, Slater appears ready to back the 23-year-old’s attacking brilliance on the representative stage.

Queensland are also set to hand Dolphins forward Kulikefu Finefeuiaki his Origin debut after Patrick Carrigan was ruled out through injury. Cowboys winger Murray Taulagi is expected to join the extended squad, while the Maroons are tipped to make four changes in total from the side beaten in Sydney.
