The Mysterious Image from 1943
An image from the 1940s has recently gone viral online, leading to a flurry of speculation about time travel. The photograph, taken on a bustling street in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1943 during World War II, appears to show a man among soldiers holding an object to his ear. This unusual detail has sparked wild theories suggesting that the unidentified figure might have been using a cellphone decades before the technology was invented.
The first mobile phone, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, was released in 1983—40 years after the photo was taken. Kristjan Hoffman, who has had the photo for generations, shared it on Facebook, noting that one of the most striking elements is a man leaning near a window and seemingly using a cell phone. His post generated a lot of discussion, with some users agreeing with his theory while others suggested the man was simply scratching his ear or checking a watch.
Hoffman took the idea further, stating that the man seemed to be in a “stupor,” wearing different clothing and acting like someone from the future.
The image was initially shared by Hoffman in 2016 but has gained renewed attention this week. It was also posted on X, where users speculated that the man might have been holding a small radio. However, the first transistor radio wasn’t released until the 1950s. One user joked, “Guy scratches ear 83 years later gets accused of being a time traveler.” Another pointed out that without “secret” cell phone towers, a phone would have been useless back then.
Another theory suggests the man could have been a spy for the Axis powers. Iceland remained neutral during the war but was occupied by Allied forces due to its strategic location. The British took control in 1940 to prevent a German invasion, and later handed over defense to the US.
Similar Theories in Other Media
A similar theory emerged from footage of a Mike Tyson boxing match in 1995. The clip appears to show a spectator in the front row using a smartphone to record the fight. Conspiracy theorists argue that this could only be a human time traveler or an alien from an advanced civilization. However, skeptics suggest it might actually be an early digital camera.
The match, which took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, was the first time in four years that Tyson stepped into the ring. It was the highest-grossing fight at the time and received international attention. However, some now believe it may have attracted even more universal interest.
The video was first uploaded to YouTube in September 2015 and has since resurfaced among conspiracy theorists searching for answers.
JammyBantam, the first YouTuber to share this strange sighting, explained that the object in the video has a lens in the center, similar to a smartphone. He emphasized that no cameras from the 1990s were designed to look like the device in the clip. “It even flashes red ffs,” he said in the video description. “I dunno if it’s a time traveler or not, but no one can explain what camera it is; a QV-100 doesn’t have a silver bit on the right, and this camera doesn’t seem to have a black line under the lens.”
Others, confused by the sighting, have shared the video hoping someone can identify the mysterious device. Some remain unconvinced, pointing out that although the device looks slim and portable, there were camcorders in the 1990s that resembled it.
