Carlton signals major list changes as football boss tackles Cripps and Weitering futures

Carlton’s Path to Improvement

Carlton football boss Chris Davies has acknowledged that the Blues’ current list is still not good enough to compete with the AFL’s top teams. However, he has not ruled out the possibility of changes involving key players like Patrick Cripps and Jacob Weitering.

Davies, along with chief executive Graham Wright, president Rob Priestley, and Eagles premiership coach Adam Simpson, has been tasked with finding the Blues’ next senior coach following Michael Voss’s resignation earlier this month. The coaching change is just the beginning, as Davies highlighted the need for significant improvements in the club’s list.

“As much as I think that our list is more balanced than it was last year, I still don’t think the list is good enough, ultimately, to compete at the top level,” he said on SEN. “And we’re going to have to do some work on that over the next period of time. We started that last year with trading out the players that we did, or letting them go in free agency.”

Carlton has already taken steps to improve its roster by trading away Coleman Medallist Charlie Curnow at the end of last year. The club could look to make more moves this season, with Cripps and Weitering being potential targets due to their star power and trade value. Both players are under contract with Carlton, making them viable options for future trades.

“I don’t need to go into it any deeper than the fact that I think it’s really important that we’ve got quality senior players at our club into the future,” he added. “The people you’ve just mentioned – Patrick, Jacob – you wouldn’t meet two more committed Carlton people.”

Davies emphasized the importance of having strong senior players who can mentor younger members of the team. He believes that a solid nucleus of experienced players is essential for the club’s long-term success.

“I still firmly believe that your club, in these situations, you have to have good senior players who are mentoring the younger blokes, showing them the way to go about their footy. I don’t subscribe to the theory that everyone is up for grabs. I certainly think that you’ve got to have a strong nucleus of people who are going to be good people at your club, and show the young players how to go about it.”

Strategic Moves and Future Planning

Davies also highlighted the need for balance in the team’s composition. While the club has made progress in improving its draft capital, there is still work to be done in acquiring young talent that can sustain the team’s performance at the top end of the ladder.

“We’re well-placed from a draft capital standpoint to get Cody Walker in, and do some other things into the future, but I want to make sure that we’re bringing in some young talent which is going to be required for us to be a sustainable force up the top end of the ladder.”

The transition game is another area where the club needs to focus. Davies acknowledged that personnel changes will be necessary to maintain the club’s competitive edge.

“I also accept that the transition game is something that the club needs to continue to be good at into the future, and part of that is a personnel discussion, no doubt.”

Key Players and Their Role

Patrick Cripps and Jacob Weitering have been identified as crucial players for the club’s future. Their commitment to Carlton and their ability to lead by example make them valuable assets. Davies stressed the importance of retaining such players to ensure the team’s continued growth and success.

“The people you’ve just mentioned – Patrick, Jacob – you wouldn’t meet two more committed Carlton people. I still firmly believe that your club, in these situations, you have to have good senior players who are mentoring the younger blokes, showing them the way to go about their footy.”

Conclusion

Carlton’s path to improvement involves a combination of strategic moves, careful planning, and a focus on developing young talent. While the club has taken steps to strengthen its roster, there is still much work to be done. The leadership of key players like Cripps and Weitering will play a vital role in shaping the club’s future. As the team continues to evolve, the emphasis on balance, sustainability, and strong senior leadership will be critical to achieving long-term success.
