Cats’ Grit and Neale’s Brilliance Fuel Comeback Triumph

Cats Roar Back: Neale’s Five Goals Inspire Stunning Comeback Win Over Fremantle

Geelong coach Chris Scott has lauded his side’s unwavering inner belief following a remarkable 10-point come-from-behind victory against Fremantle. The Cats, powered by a sensational five-goal haul from Shannon Neale, clawed their way back from a significant deficit to secure a thrilling 16.14 (110) to 14.16 (100) win at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.

The triumph was particularly sweet for Geelong, who had suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Gold Coast Suns in the opening round. Their encounter with Fremantle began in a similarly concerning fashion, with the visiting Dockers piling on eight goals in the opening term.

However, the tide dramatically turned in the second half. Midfield dynamos Max Holmes, with a commanding 32 disposals and five clearances, Bailey Smith, contributing 30 disposals and a crucial goal, and Tanner Bruhn, amassing 24 touches, were instrumental in the Cats’ resurgence. Geelong outscored their opponents 13 goals to six after the first quarter, a testament to their grit and determination.

“The most important thing is the players had belief that if we did shift a few things that we could turn the momentum of the game,” Scott remarked post-match. “It’s a rare situation to have that belief when you’ve been so badly outplayed; you know, they were dominant. It’s not as if we predicted that start, but we were well aware of the threat.”

Fremantle had etched their names in the record books by posting their highest-ever first-quarter score outside of Western Australia. At the first change, they held a commanding 8.4 to 3.1 lead, with Luke Jackson, Hayden Young, and Andrew Brayshaw asserting early dominance.

“We thought we allowed them to do what they do best a bit too much,” Scott explained. “So when there was a bit more pressure around the ball, we thought like we gave ourselves a bit more of an even chance. It obviously wasn’t going to get fixed in the next quarter – it had to be a belief that over the course of the next three quarters we could work our way into the game. I’m proud of them for believing in the plan and getting it done.”

Fremantle’s Frustrations and Geelong’s Resilience

Despite the eventual outcome, Fremantle’s efforts were not without merit. Luke Jackson put in a valiant performance, accumulating 27 disposals, 22 hit-outs, 10 clearances, and booting a goal. Caleb Serong was another tireless contributor for the Dockers, racking up 30 disposals, eight clearances, and a major.

Up forward, Josh Treacy proved a constant aerial threat, snagging two goals and eight marks, while Isaiah Dudley chipped in with three majors.

However, Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir was left to lament “sloppy” errors that proved costly, allowing scoring opportunities to be squandered and leaving his defence exposed. The Dockers held the lead at every change, but crucially, not when the final siren sounded.

“We were disappointed with the way we handled the second half and disappointed with how we handled the last quarter,” Longmuir stated. “We didn’t defend Geelong well enough, and when we did create opportunities back the other way, we just couldn’t tie our work off. We kicked 3.8 in the second half.”

Key Performances and Injury Returns

The comeback was further bolstered by several key individual performances for Geelong. Captain Patrick Dangerfield, returning from a calf injury that saw him miss the opening round, started slowly but delivered two crucial contested marks that directly led to goals.

Jeremy Cameron, also back from a quad injury, kicked three goals, a tally matched by Shaun Mannagh, who achieved his remarkable feat in a blistering nine-minute burst during the second quarter. The resilience shown by the Cats in overcoming an early onslaught and a significant deficit underscores their fighting spirit and the strong belief within the playing group. This victory will undoubtedly provide a significant confidence boost as they navigate the remainder of the AFL season.
