Barcelona Thrash Newcastle to Secure Champions League Quarter-Final Berth
Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were the architects of Newcastle’s Champions League exit, as Barcelona showcased their attacking prowess to secure a commanding 8-3 aggregate victory and a place in the quarter-finals. The Spanish giants, on a remarkable 13-game winning streak at the Nou Camp, put on a dazzling display in the second half to dismantle Eddie Howe’s side, who ultimately succumbed to a series of costly errors.
The night, however, didn’t start as smoothly as Barcelona might have hoped. The first half proved to be a chaotic affair, with both teams demonstrating defensive frailties. Newcastle, despite facing a formidable opponent, managed to repeatedly get themselves back into the contest, only to repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot.
A Frenetic First Half
The opening goal came in unfortunate circumstances for Newcastle. Malick Thiaw slipped after being rounded by Lamine Yamal, and Lewis Hall also lost his footing, allowing Raphinha to combine with Fermin Lopez before calmly slotting the ball home.
Newcastle responded spiritedly, levelling the scores within seven minutes. Jacob Ramsey found Lewis Hall, who exchanged passes with Harvey Barnes on the left flank before delivering a cross that Anthony Elanga calmly finished past Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

The Magpies’ joy was short-lived. Within three minutes, they conceded again due to a defensive lapse. Gerard Martin was left unmarked at the far post to head down Raphinha’s free-kick, and Marc Bernal controlled the ball before beating Aaron Ramsdale.
Newcastle’s resilience shone through once more, as they equalised just five minutes later. An ill-judged back-heel from Yamal was intercepted by Hall, who then fed Barnes. Barnes delivered a cross, and Elanga was on hand to slide home his second of the night.
Newcastle even had a chance to take the lead moments later, but Anthony Gordon steered Elanga’s cross wide. Had it not been for a crucial block from Dan Burn on a Lewandowski shot, and a wayward effort from Yamal after Ramsdale had saved a Raphinha attempt, the scoreline could have looked even more precarious for Barcelona before halftime.

Just as the first half seemed destined to end all square, Barcelona were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time. After a review by French referee Francois Letexier of Kieran Trippier’s challenge on Raphinha as he attempted to convert Lopez’s cross, Yamal stepped up and converted the spot-kick to give Barcelona a crucial advantage heading into the break.
Second-Half Blitz Seals the Deal
The second half saw Barcelona decisively take control of the match. Seven minutes after the restart, Ramsdale was beaten for the fourth time. Raphinha cleverly turned Martin’s pass around the corner, allowing Lopez to race through and nonchalantly side-foot the ball into the bottom corner.

The floodgates then truly opened for the Catalan giants. Within four minutes, Lewandowski added his name to the scoresheet, powering home a corner from Raphinha.
The Polish striker then doubled his tally in the 61st minute with an emphatic finish, following a dazzling run from Yamal, who bamboozled both Burn and Thiaw.

Raphinha completed the scoring for Barcelona, rounding off a dominant second-half performance by intercepting a wayward pass from Ramsey across his own goal and finishing clinically.
The result, a 7-2 victory on the night and an 8-3 aggregate triumph, was a harsh lesson for Newcastle. While Howe would have been pleased with his side’s attacking intent in the first half, their defensive frailties were brutally exposed. The Magpies now face the daunting task of preparing for their crucial derby clash against Sunderland on Sunday, with midfielder Sandro Tonali a significant doubt for the fixture. For Barcelona, it’s a statement performance as they advance confidently into the latter stages of the Champions League.
