MAFS Expert Mel Schilling Loses Cancer Battle

Tributes Pour In for ‘Married At First Sight’ Expert Mel Schilling Following Devastating Cancer Battle

Australian television personality and renowned psychologist Mel Schilling has passed away at the age of 54, leaving behind a legacy of empathy, wisdom, and unwavering strength. The beloved expert, known for her role on Married At First Sight (MAFS), succumbed to a brave battle with cancer, which had tragically spread to her brain.

Mel Schilling was diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023. In a poignant health update shared just eleven days prior to her passing, she revealed the devastating news that the cancer had metastasised to her brain. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Gareth Brisbane, and their 10-year-old daughter, Maddie.

Gareth Brisbane shared the heartbreaking news of his wife’s passing on her social media, stating, “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.” He recounted a deeply touching moment in her final hours, where Mel, despite her weakened state, managed to whisper a profound message for him and Maddie. “It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me,” he wrote, describing her as an “incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”

Brisbane elaborated on his wife’s remarkable resilience, particularly her approach to motherhood and her television career. He noted that she became “a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both.” He lauded her courage in facing cancer in her early fifties, highlighting her grace and perseverance through grueling treatments.

“This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming,” he stated.

His heartfelt tribute served as a powerful reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing loved ones. “Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff,” he urged. Brisbane expressed profound gratitude for their 15 years together, calling it “the privilege of my life to be by her side.”

The outpouring of support from fans worldwide has been immense. Brisbane extended his sincere thanks for the well wishes received during Mel’s cancer journey. He also specifically acknowledged the MAFS family, including John, Alessandra, Charlene, Roxy, and Sophie, for their kindness and compassion.

Mel Schilling joined the Married At First Sight experiment in its second season in 2016, quickly becoming a fan favourite. Her success in Australia led to her joining the expert panel on MAFS UK in 2021. Prior to her television career, Schilling cultivated a distinguished 20-year career as a registered psychologist, life coach, and therapist.

Despite her professional achievements, Schilling often described herself as a “late bloomer” in love. She met her husband, Gareth, on a dating website in 2010, and they eventually married in Bali eight years later.

The early years of their relationship were described as “pretty full-on.” Schilling experienced a miscarriage at the age of 40 before she and Brisbane successfully conceived their daughter, Maddie, through IVF when Mel was 42.

The diagnosis of colon cancer in December 2023 marked the beginning of a challenging period. Schilling underwent extensive chemotherapy and treatment throughout 2024, often filming both the Australian and UK versions of MAFS back-to-back. She found solace and a sense of self in her work during this difficult time.

“To be totally honest, being at work was my favourite and it was so important because I felt like so much of myself was taken away with being unwell,” Schilling told nine.com.au in January 2025. “Being able to step into my work role was just so incredibly rewarding for me. It just reminded me that I’m still me. I can still be of value to people, be of service. It was really, really important to me. I’m so glad that I was able to do it.”

Tragically, two years after her initial diagnosis, Schilling received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to her brain, leaving her oncology team with no further treatment options. She had been undergoing radiotherapy sessions after experiencing severe headaches and numbness.

“Over the past two years, while filming MAFS, I underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and was later told I was eligible for a ground-breaking clinical trial specific to my gene type, due to start in March 2026,” she had shared. “Once again, my optimism soared that I might beat this thing. Over Christmas, however, I began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down my right side. After many tests I was told the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain and, despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do.”

In her final message, Mel urged others to prioritize their health: “If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”

Endemol Shine Australia (ESA), the production company behind the Australian Married At First Sight, expressed deep sorrow at Schilling’s passing. Tara McWilliams, director of content for ESA, stated, “We are beyond heartbroken to say goodbye to our beloved Mel. In this moment of deep sadness, there are no words that really feel like enough, only a huge sense of loss for a beautiful woman who meant so much to so many of us here at ESA.”

McWilliams further described Schilling as “deeply loved for her kindness, her warmth, her honesty, her sparkle, and the way she made everyone around her feel seen and understood.” She added, “She had a rare and beautiful way of connecting with people, being in her presence was something truly special.” The production house extended their deepest condolences to Gareth, Maddie, and Mel’s family and friends.

Michael Healy, Nine’s executive director of entertainment, streaming and broadcasting, also paid tribute to Schilling, acknowledging her “gift for connecting with people.” He said, “All of us at Nine are deeply saddened by the loss of Mel Schilling. Mel was a wonderful colleague and friend. She had a gift for connecting with people and helping them navigate life’s challenges. For years, she guided us through the complexities of the human heart with wisdom, honesty, and kindness. Mel was a big part of our family, and she will be greatly missed.”

Channel 4, the broadcaster of MAFS UK, remembered Mel Schilling as “someone who radiated joy, warmth and optimism.” A statement from the channel read, “All of us at Channel 4 are incredibly saddened by the news of Mel’s death. Our thoughts and condolences are, first and foremost, with her family and loved ones. We’re privileged to be the channel that is home to Mel’s work, which was at the heart of Married At First Sight‘s phenomenal success, both in the UK and Australia. It reflected so much about her – her fierce advocacy for other women, her passion for healthy relationships and her mission to unite people in love.”

The channel also shared a personal reflection, noting that for many at Channel 4, Mel was more than a colleague; she was a friend who “energised every room she walked into, with humour and positivity.” The immense sorrow felt by viewers and those who knew her is a testament to the profound impact she had on so many lives.
