The BAFTAs also took the opportunity to recognise significant contributions to the arts and cinema. Dame Donna Langley was bestowed with the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship, the arts charity’s highest accolade, celebrating her prolific career as the British Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment and her standing as an influential and respected figure in the global entertainment landscape.
Furthermore, Clare Binns, the Creative Director of Picture House Cinemas, received the BAFTA Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award. This honour specifically acknowledged her unwavering dedication to championing diverse and fiercely independent films on cinema screens across the United Kingdom.
The competition for the coveted awards was fierce, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, leading the pack with an impressive fourteen nominations. However, it faced formidable competition from the supernatural horror Sinners, which garnered thirteen nominations, and Chloé Zhao’s poignant drama Hamnet, a moving exploration of Shakespeare’s family life, securing eleven nominations.
Notably, Hamnet, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, made history by breaking the record for the most nominations for a female-directed film in BAFTA history. Irish star Jessie Buckley earned a nomination for her leading role in the film, building on her previous accolades, including a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award, and her nominations for the Academy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Co-star Paul Mescal, who was notably overlooked for an Oscar nomination, was also a strong contender, recognised with a Supporting Actor BAFTA nod.
Elsewhere, Marty Supreme and Timothée Chalamet were hoping for further success, having already achieved significant wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. With eleven BAFTA nominations each, including nods for Best Film and Best Actor, they were aiming for a hat-trick of major awards.
Other films also received multiple nominations: Frankenstein and Sentimental Value each secured eight nominations, while I Swear and Bugonia earned five. Three nominations were received by The Ballad of Wallis Island, Pillion, and F1.
The race for the Leading Actress BAFTA was particularly exciting, with strong contenders including Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Chase Infiniti for One Battle After Another, Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value, and Emma Stone for Bugonia.
