Val Kilmer’s Final Performance: A Digital Resurrection with AI
The legacy of Hollywood icon Val Kilmer is set to continue beyond his passing, with the actor slated to make a posthumous appearance in his final film role, brought back to life through the advanced capabilities of artificial intelligence. This comes a year after the beloved star tragically succumbed to throat cancer at the age of 65 on April 1, 2025.
Prior to his health declining, Kilmer had committed to starring in the film As Deep as the Grave. However, his deteriorating health prevented him from participating in the actual filming process. In response, the filmmakers opted for an innovative solution: employing AI technology to portray Kilmer as Father Fintan, a character described as both a Catholic priest and a Native American spiritualist.
The decision to utilise generative AI for Kilmer’s final performance was met with the full endorsement of his estate, including his children, Mercedes and Jack. They granted permission for the use of AI, drawing upon younger images and footage from Kilmer’s later years, much of which was graciously provided by the family.
Writer and director Coerte Voorhees shared his perspective with Variety, emphasising the profound importance of the project to Kilmer and his family. “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this. He really thought it was an important story that he wanted his name on,” Voorhees explained. “It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay let’s do this. Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”
Variety has also unveiled the first AI-generated image of Kilmer as he will appear in the film, offering a glimpse into this unique cinematic endeavour. Kilmer’s daughter further voiced her support for the project, stating to the publication, “He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling. This spirit is something that we are all honouring within this specific film, of which he was an integral part.”
The film also boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin.
However, the announcement of Kilmer’s AI resurrection has not been universally welcomed. Many fans took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express their dismay and criticism. One commenter voiced a strong ethical objection, stating, “I do not care how much permission they had to do this, no one should be allowed to do this. It should be illegal to resurrect the visage of dead people with genAI imo.” Another user expressed a similar sentiment, remarking, “no amount of moral dressing is going to change how sick and greedy this is. the family should be ashamed tbh.”
This is not the first instance of AI being employed to enhance Val Kilmer’s performances. Fans were deeply moved by his return as Lieutenant Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky in the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Following the news of his passing, his poignant final on-screen appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, alongside Tom Cruise, garnered renewed attention. Kilmer, who was celebrated for his role as Iceman in the original 1986 blockbuster, saw lead star Tom Cruise, 62, champion his return as his on-screen rival.
Kilmer’s vocal cords were significantly impacted by a tracheotomy performed in 2014 after his diagnosis with throat cancer, which permanently affected his ability to speak. It was AI technology that was instrumental in regenerating his voice for the 2022 blockbuster.
Viewers were brought to tears when Iceman, who had been promoted to Admiral, reappeared on screen alongside Tom Cruise’s Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.
In a particularly touching scene, Iceman communicated with Maverick solely through typed words displayed on a screen. The AI technology was then used to regenerate Kilmer’s voice, allowing some of his dialogue to be heard aloud, adding a powerful layer to the emotional exchange.
Following their heartfelt on-screen conversation, where Iceman imparted advice to Maverick to “let go” of the past, the narrative shifted to Maverick attending his friend’s funeral. These emotional scenes resonated deeply with audiences at the time, and following the news of Kilmer’s death, fans revisited these poignant moments.
The acclaimed actor, renowned for his roles in films such as Top Gun and Batman, passed away from pneumonia on April 1, 2025. A death certificate obtained by TMZ confirmed the cause, with his daughter having previously revealed that a lung infection had claimed her father’s life.
The official death certificate from the Los Angeles County Department of Health listed the underlying causes as “acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue.” Squamous cell carcinoma, also known as laryngeal cancer, is a type of cancer that forms in the delicate, flat cells lining the throat, encompassing the larynx and pharynx.
Kilmer had publicly disclosed his battle with throat cancer 11 years prior, undergoing emergency tracheotomies that had a lasting impact on his speech. While the actor had announced he was cancer-free for four years in 2020, his death certificate confirms the recurrence of the disease. Additional contributing factors noted on the certificate include malnutrition and a “tracheocutaneous fistula,” an abnormal connection between the trachea and the skin, which can occur after the removal of a tracheostomy tube.
