Drew Barrymore: “Dead Fish” Amid Perimenopause

Drew Barrymore Navigates Perimenopause: An Unexpected Return of Her Period

Hollywood star and talk show host Drew Barrymore has candidly shared her personal journey through perimenopause, detailing a recent and unexpected turn of events: the return of her menstrual cycle after an extended absence. This experience has provided a unique insight into the fluctuating nature of this life stage for women.

Barrymore, known for her open and honest approach, revealed on a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that she had been anticipating reaching the official milestone of menopause. “I can’t even start today without being honest because I can’t fake anything,” she admitted, describing her current physical state with vivid imagery. “I am so bloated that I feel like some carp that got brought up to the beach and I’m just that dead fish.”

The actress, who is 51 years old, was nearing the twelve-month mark without a period, the standard timeframe required to formally enter menopause. “I was about to hit my one-year mark for my period and get right into menopause, where I belong,” she explained to her co-host, Ross Mathews. “I got it. I’m at 11 months. So, I’m back down to zero.” This unexpected development has meant a temporary pause on her transition into menopause.

The Emotional and Physical Toll of Perimenopause

Barrymore didn’t hold back in describing the multifaceted challenges she’s facing during this transitional phase. “I feel unattractive and I’m so hormonal and nothing makes sense,” she emphasised. “And I’m irritable and I’m bloated and I’m emotionally unstable.” These are common symptoms experienced by many women as their bodies undergo significant hormonal shifts.

Despite the personal discomfort, Barrymore found solace in her professional environment. “I feel a lot better because at least you know where I’m at and I always feel better after being here,” she stated, highlighting the supportive atmosphere of her show.

This isn’t the first time Barrymore has spoken about her experiences with aging and hormonal changes. The mother of two, Olive, 13, and Frankie, 11, with ex-husband Will Kopelman, previously discussed the difficulties she encountered while undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in her early fifties. HRT is a common treatment for managing menopausal symptoms.

“Everyone said it would be trial and error, and I just went through a lot of error,” she recounted in an interview with People magazine in November. The experience was so profound that she struggled to recognise herself. “I did not recognize the person I saw in the mirror. I was like, ‘Is that the crypt keeper? No, that’s me.’”

Strategies for Well-being During Midlife

The actress described feeling “puffy from hormones” and generally unwell. To combat these feelings, Barrymore has implemented significant lifestyle changes. These include:

  • Dietary adjustments: Modifying her eating habits to better support her body.
  • Prioritising sleep: Ensuring she gets adequate rest, which is crucial for hormonal balance.
  • Increased exercise: Incorporating regular physical activity into her routine.

However, perhaps the most impactful strategy she has adopted is cultivating self-compassion. “I think trying to also be a little kinder to ourselves mentally,” she reflected, “and not speaking so negatively inside of our own heads has been a huge help for how good I feel about myself.” This mindful approach to self-talk and emotional well-being is a powerful tool for navigating the often-challenging aspects of aging.

Drew Barrymore’s openness serves as a valuable reminder that perimenopause and menopause are natural, albeit sometimes difficult, stages of life. Her willingness to share her experiences not only makes her relatable but also contributes to a broader conversation about women’s health and well-being as they age. She is one of many public figures who have bravely stepped forward to discuss the realities of getting older, demystifying the process and offering encouragement to others.
