Escaped Roo on the Loose in Wisconsin: Authorities Seek Public Assistance
A surprising escape has captured the attention of central Wisconsin as a kangaroo, affectionately known as Chesney, has made a daring bid for freedom from the Sunshine Farm petting zoo in Necedah. The Juneau County Sheriff’s Office has officially appealed to the public for assistance in locating the adventurous marsupial, who was last seen making a swift exit from his enclosure.
The incident, described by authorities as a “full-on prison break,” occurred on a Wednesday afternoon. Chesney, reportedly spooked, managed to slip out of his enclosure and was later spotted “bouncing through the area of 23rd & 9th like he’s training for the Olympics,” according to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.
While photos circulating online have playfully depicted Chesney sporting denim pants, his owners have clarified that the daring escapee was not wearing his usual attire when he made his getaway.
A Worrying Disappearance and a Desperate Search
Chesney’s owner expressed significant concern over his disappearance. She had been actively involved in the search efforts, deploying a drone to cover the surrounding areas on both Wednesday and Thursday. Despite her diligent efforts, as of Thursday afternoon, Chesney remained at large.
The Sunshine Farm Facebook page has become a hub for updates, with Chesney’s owner reporting multiple sightings of the kangaroo heading in various directions. “He could be anywhere,” she stated, adding a humorous yet practical observation: “He doesn’t have his diaper on right now, so he blends in with the woods.” This detail, while unusual, highlights the challenges authorities face in tracking down the elusive animal.

The sheriff’s office has issued a clear advisory to the public: “Chesney is likely scared, so please be careful with him. Please don’t challenge him to a boxing match.” This cautionary note underscores the need for a gentle and non-confrontational approach should anyone encounter the runaway roo.
The Uncommon Pet and Past Escapes
While the presence of a kangaroo might seem exotic, owning such an animal is legal in Wisconsin. The Sunshine Farm Facebook page features images of various animals housed at the petting zoo, but Chesney stands out as a particularly unique resident.
This is not the first time a kangaroo has made headlines for an unexpected adventure. Last August, a kangaroo named Sheila captured public attention after escaping her enclosure in Alabama. Sheila was observed hopping along the shoulder of Interstate 85 before her owner was able to safely apprehend her using a tranquilizer dart. Thankfully, Sheila was reunited with her family and received a veterinary check-up at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. In Sheila’s case, she was a personal pet rather than an animal part of a petting zoo operation, her owner had previously shared.
The ongoing search for Chesney highlights the unpredictable nature of animal behaviour and the unique challenges faced by those who care for exotic animals. Authorities continue to rely on the public’s vigilance and cooperation to ensure Chesney’s safe return to Sunshine Farm.
