Centrelink Boost: $1,800 More for New Aussie Parents

Major Boost to Paid Parental Leave for Australian Families

Australian parents are set to benefit from a significant increase in government-funded paid parental leave, with changes coming into effect from July 1, 2026. Services Australia will be extending the duration of paid parental leave, offering families more time to bond with their newborns and adjust to life with a new child.

This upcoming change represents the final planned increase in the duration of paid parental leave under current government policy. From the new financial year, parents will be able to access 130 days, or approximately 26 weeks, of paid parental leave. This is an increase from the current entitlement of 120 days (24 weeks) for children born or adopted since July 1, 2025.

The financial impact of this extension is substantial. Families will receive an estimated $24,000 in government-funded leave over the six-month period. This increased support aims to alleviate some of the financial pressures new parents often face, allowing them to focus more on their growing family.

To be eligible for the increased 130 days of paid parental leave, your child must be born or enter your care from July 1, 2026. Services Australia has clarified that claims made before this date will be processed based on the current 120-day entitlement. Parents will need to provide proof of the birth or adoption date occurring on or after July 1, 2026, to have the extra 10 days added to their balance.

Changes to Partner Leave

In addition to the overall increase in parental leave days, there will also be an adjustment to the number of days specifically reserved for the other partner. This dedicated portion of leave will rise from 15 days to 20 days from July 1, 2026. This aims to encourage greater involvement from both parents during the crucial early stages of a child’s life.

Furthermore, parents will continue to have the flexibility to take up to 20 days of their paid parental leave concurrently. This allows both parents to be on leave at the same time, providing a stronger support network for the family.

Eligibility Criteria for Parental Leave Pay

To access the Parental Leave Pay scheme, prospective parents must meet specific criteria, primarily focusing on income and work history.

  • Income Test:

    • The primary income test assesses an individual’s earnings in the financial year preceding either the birth or adoption of the child, or the date the claim is lodged. For the 2024-25 financial year, an individual’s taxable income must not exceed $180,007.
    • If an individual does not meet this threshold, a family income test may be applicable, with a current limit of $373,094 or less.
  • Work Test:

    • To qualify under the work test, individuals must have been employed for at least 10 out of the 13 months leading up to the child’s birth or adoption.
    • During this qualifying period, a minimum of 330 hours of work must have been completed, which equates to approximately one day of work per week.

Payment Rates and Superannuation

The rate of Parental Leave Pay is benchmarked against the national minimum wage, which is scheduled for an increase from July 1, 2026. The government has indicated support for an above-inflation pay rise this year, which will directly impact the parental leave payment rates.

For the 2025-26 financial year, the daily rate for Parental Leave Pay will be $189.62, translating to $948.10 for a standard five-day week. The increase from 120 to 130 days means that eligible parents will receive at least an additional $1,896.20 in parental leave payments.

A significant policy enhancement introduced since July 1, 2025, is the inclusion of superannuation contributions on Parental Leave Pay. This means that an additional 12 per cent of the parental leave payment is contributed to the parent’s superannuation fund, helping to bolster their long-term retirement savings. This initiative acknowledges the importance of continued financial security for parents, even while they are on leave.
