Student shoots teacher then takes own life

A tragic incident occurred at a high school in San Antonio, Texas, when a 15-year-old student shot a teacher and then took his own life. Authorities confirmed the event on Monday, though details about the motive remain unclear.

The shooting took place at Hill Country College Preparatory High School, where the Comal County Sheriff’s Office has not yet provided information on what led to the incident. The condition of the injured teacher was not immediately known, as no updates were released by the sheriff’s office.

The male student who carried out the shooting died on the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sheriff’s office. The school quickly initiated a lockdown at 8:34 a.m., just minutes before classes were scheduled to begin at 8:55 a.m. Students reported hearing loud noises and screams coming from a second-floor room, with one witness describing hearing five shots and yelling before being instructed to take cover in a classroom.

Students were transported to a nearby middle school, where parents gathered in long lines, some praying, as they waited to be reunited with their children. Jesse Lopez, a parent, shared his concerns with KSAT-TV, noting that his daughter, who has autism, may struggle with returning to school due to fear.

Hill Country College Preparatory High School is part of the Comal Independent School District and focuses on preparing students for college through a curriculum centered on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Electives include cybersecurity and engineering. The school opened in August 2020 with a freshman class and now serves grades nine through 12, with approximately 260 students enrolled this academic year.
