Queensland Reds’ Mental Toughness Shines in Historic Victory
The Queensland Reds have made history by defeating the Crusaders 31-26 in a thrilling Super Rugby Pacific clash, ending a 15-year winless streak at home in Brisbane. This victory marks a significant milestone for the team, who had struggled with consistency in recent matches.
Before this game, the Reds were on the brink of falling out of the competition’s top six after conceding 94 points in their last two games. They had only managed one win in their last 15 encounters against the Crusaders, with their last home victory coming in the 2011 Super Rugby grand final. Despite these challenges, the Reds entered the match as underdogs, determined to turn their season around.
The Crusaders, on the other hand, were aiming to make history by becoming the first side in Super Rugby to score 50 or more points in three consecutive games. However, the Reds proved to be a formidable opponent, showcasing their resilience and determination throughout the match.
A Team That Refused to Give Up
Coach Les Kiss praised the mental toughness of his players, especially after a tough loss to the Force in their previous game. “There’s mental toughness that we see from the team. Fraser (McReight) and the boys were super honest with themselves last week,” Kiss said. He emphasized the importance of being pragmatic and focusing on what they could do better.
“We weren’t far off on a lot of things, but we had to make sure we made amends tonight. It wasn’t neat and tidy, but there were some worthy moments, some worthy attitudes and worthy mindsets that stood up when it mattered.”
Despite the challenges, the Reds managed to secure a crucial victory, which propelled them seven points above the seventh-placed Highlanders. This win not only boosted their confidence but also highlighted the team’s ability to perform under pressure.
Key Players and Future Prospects
One of the standout performers in the match was Tom Lynagh, although he was unwell during the game. The Reds are hopeful that he will return after their bye week. However, another key player, Carter Gordon, may face a longer absence after sustaining a possible knee injury during the match.

On the other hand, Filipo Daugunu delivered a stellar performance, running for 120 metres and scoring a crucial late try in his 100th competition appearance. Coach Kiss was particularly impressed with Daugunu’s effort. “He is a competitive bug, and what I liked at the end of the game tonight was that he was spent, which meant he invested big time and heavily into that (game).”

Captain Fraser McReight also praised Daugunu, highlighting his quiet yet impactful presence on the field. “How good is he? He’s reserved and quiet as well. He could also be there without you knowing he’s there, which is just pretty special. He goes about his business extremely well.”

Daugunu’s performance has further solidified his position as a key player for the Reds, with many believing he is a strong contender for a starting jersey ahead of next year’s World Cup. His ability to perform in high-pressure situations makes him an invaluable asset to the team.
As the Reds continue their journey in the Super Rugby Pacific, their recent victory serves as a testament to their resilience and determination. With a mix of experienced players and emerging stars, the team is well-positioned to build on this success and achieve even greater heights in the upcoming seasons.
