A Queensland Jockey Faces Life-Threatening Injuries After Being Trapped Under a Dead Horse
A 67-year-old jockey from Queensland is facing the possibility of losing both legs after being trapped under a dead horse for six hours. Shane McGovern, who was riding a nine-year-old gelding named Reformist during routine trackwork in Charters Towers, found himself in a life-threatening situation that has left his family and the racing community in shock.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in the rural town of Charters Towers, located more than 130km southwest of Townsville. It is reported that the horse suffered an aneurysm and collapsed, landing on McGovern and trapping his legs beneath its body. The weight of the animal caused severe damage, cutting off circulation and leading to nerve damage.
McGovern’s wife, Kim, discovered him six hours later. She described the moment as both shocking and unforgettable. “I thought ‘well, that’s Shane, he’ll just go off for a ride,’ which is what he does because the horse was supposed to be racing on Monday,” she said. “But I’m absolutely kicking myself, and it’s a thing I will never forget.”
She recounted how she saw a “ghoulish little arm” emerge from under the horse, with McGovern saying, “I’m all right.” Despite his words, the reality of the situation was far more serious.
Medical Condition and Treatment
McGovern is currently in an induced coma at Townsville Hospital, according to the Australian Jockeys’ Association. His condition has raised concerns about the long-term effects of the trauma. Safety officer Kevin Ring explained that the inability to move his legs significantly impacted his blood circulation, resulting in nerve damage.
“There’s a possibility he may lose one or both legs,” Ring said. Surgeons have already operated on his thighs, but the calf areas remain open for monitoring to assess tissue damage and prevent infection.
Kim shared details about her husband’s current state, describing how he is conscious but under the influence of high-powered drugs. “He’s hallucinating and then gets a bit hyperventilated,” she said. “They knocked him back out into an induced coma, put the breathing tube back in to give his body a rest and they’ll keep him like that for a couple of days.”
Impact on the Racing Community
The incident has sent shockwaves through the racing community, with many expressing concern for McGovern’s recovery. As a seasoned jockey, his accident has highlighted the risks involved in the sport, even during routine training sessions.
The tragedy also serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols and emergency response measures in the industry. While the exact cause of the horse’s collapse is still under investigation, the event has sparked discussions about the need for improved safety standards on racecourses.
Ongoing Recovery and Support
As McGovern remains in hospital, his family and friends are rallying around him, offering support during this difficult time. The road to recovery is expected to be long and challenging, particularly if he faces the loss of one or both legs.
The racing community has also shown solidarity, with many expressing hope for his full recovery. As the medical team continues to monitor his condition, the focus remains on providing the best possible care and ensuring that he receives the support needed to navigate the coming weeks and months.
