A New Chapter in the World of Willy Wonka
Taika Waititi and Kit Connor are set to bring a fresh take on a beloved classic with the upcoming animated Netflix adaptation of Roald Dahl’s iconic story, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. This new production, titled Charlie Vs The Chocolate Factory, is an exciting reimagining that brings the tale into the modern era.
The film draws inspiration from Dahl’s 1964 novel, which follows Charlie Bucket as he wins a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s whimsical confectionery empire. However, this contemporary version shifts the setting to modern-day London, exploring what happens after the golden ticket competition. In a surprising twist, the story reveals that Wonka has served time in prison for an unusual crime: transforming a child into a blueberry.
Award-winning director and actor Taika Waititi will voice the role of Willy Wonka, while Kit Connor takes on the part of Charlie Paley, a new character who leads a group of young people determined to infiltrate Wonka’s factory and steal one of his famous chocolate bars.
Waititi, who will also serve as an executive producer, shared his excitement about the project: “Our directors, Jared (Stern) and Elaine (Bogan), have a bold vision befitting this new adventure whilst remaining sympathetic to the legacy, and I’m thrilled to play my part in bringing Willy Wonka to life in animated form. He is so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius – if a little mischievous at times – is hugely exciting.”
The film is set for release next year and promises original songs, new characters, and “surprising returns.” Kit Connor, known for his role in the hit series Heartstopper, expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m so excited to enter the wonderful world of Wonka. I was immediately caught by the early concept art, and the directors’ vision for the film – capturing the spirit and heart that made the original story so special, whilst imbuing it with something so fresh and unique. It’s such a fun representation of the London that I know. This new adventure is going to surprise audiences around the world, you’re in for a treat.”
Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, the directors of the film, added: “Having been raised on the delightfully twisted world of Willy Wonka, it’s a privilege to bring his continued adventures to life as twisted adults. And how sweet to do it like never before via the magic of animation, creating a Charlie Vs The Chocolate Factory that’s more deliciously unhinged than your wildest imagination. If we do a rotten job, you can throw us down a rubbish chute!”

A Legacy of Adaptations
The original Charlie And The Chocolate Factory has had several notable adaptations over the years. The first major cinematic version was Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. The story was later adapted into the 2005 film Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton and featuring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
In 2023, a prequel titled Wonka was released, starring Timothée Chalamet as the eccentric chocolatier. This film followed the young Wonka as he embarked on his mission to open his first shop.
With this latest animated adaptation, the world of Willy Wonka continues to evolve, offering new perspectives and creative interpretations of a timeless tale. As the film prepares for its release, fans can look forward to a fresh and exciting take on a beloved story.
