A Historic Gathering in Accra: The 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship
Accra is set to become the epicenter of a major sporting event as approximately 350 athletes from 21 African countries gather for the 15th edition of the Africa Armwrestling Championship. The championship, scheduled to take place at the Borteyman Sports Complex on May 1-2, 2026, will bring together the continent’s most elite arm wrestlers in a competition that promises to be both intense and significant.
The event carries the theme “Pulling Africa Together,” which underscores the role of sports in promoting regional integration and unity among African nations. This theme is particularly symbolic, given the nature of arm wrestling, where two athletes lock hands in a test of strength and endurance. It represents a powerful metaphor for collaboration and mutual respect across borders.
This year’s championship has drawn a diverse array of participants, with traditional powerhouses such as Egypt, Mali, Nigeria, and South Africa having already announced their full squads. These nations have long been dominant in the sport, and their presence signals a strong intent to secure top positions on the podium. Their participation also poses a formidable challenge for the Ghana national team, known as the Golden Arms.
However, the tournament is not just about established teams. This year’s edition also features emerging nations that are expected to make a significant impact. Delegations from Benin, Mauritius, Cameroon, Central Africa, Kenya, Eswatini, Burundi, Niger, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire, and Togo are arriving in Accra, with analysts suggesting that these “underdog” teams could create unexpected upsets. The inclusion of South Africa and Benin, in particular, adds a fresh dynamic to the southern and West African representation in the competition.
Beyond the physical contest, the organizers have placed a strong emphasis on the “Pulling Africa Together” initiative. This theme is not only a call for unity but also a reflection of the sport’s unique requirement of two athletes locking hands, symbolizing connection and respect. According to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the event serves as a platform to bridge cultural gaps and strengthen the bonds between African nations through fair play and sportsmanship.
Maame Efua Houadjeto, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, expressed confidence in the event’s success. “We are fully prepared to host a world-class championship that reflects the hospitality of Ghana. By bringing the continent to Accra, including our brothers and sisters from Egypt, Nigeria, and the rising stars from Benin and Mauritius, we are demonstrating that Africa is stronger when we lock hands. The theme ‘Pulling Africa Together’ is a call for continental development and peace. We are ready to show that Ghana remains the heartbeat of African sports and the best in hospitality,” she said.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of Ghana and Africa Armwrestling, commended the various partners who have contributed to the success of the championship. These include the Ministry of Sports & Recreation, Ghana Olympic Committee, National Sports Authority, National Petroleum Authority, National Health Insurance Authority, Bethel Logistics, Verna Water, Kofikrom Pharmacy Limited, Stanbic Bank, Kofata Motors, Royal Dach Pharmacy, IMAH Hospital, Event Factory, Awards Center, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and the Ghana Tourism Authority for their unwavering support.
Mr. Kenneth Odeng Adade, Chief Operations Officer for the championship, highlighted the preparations being made at the Borteyman Sports Complex. The venue has been equipped with international-standard arm wrestling tables and electronic systems to ensure a seamless experience for athletes and spectators alike. Security and medical protocols have also been enhanced to accommodate the influx of international visitors and fans.
As the competition officially kicks off, the “Golden Arms” of Ghana will be looking to capitalize on their home-court advantage against the technical skill of the Egyptians and the raw power of the Nigerians. With the new forces from Benin and South Africa also in the mix, Accra is set for an unforgettable sporting spectacle.
