Goal machine Ssenyonjo propels Leopards to title race

Samuel Ssenyonjo: The Heartbeat of AFC Leopards

Samuel Ssenyonjo, the attacking force behind AFC Leopards, has become a central figure in the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League title race. His consistent performances and ability to deliver in crucial moments have made him one of the most feared forwards in the league. Since joining from Express FC in September 2025, Ssenyonjo has quickly adapted to the demands of Kenyan football, showcasing sharp movement, physical presence, and a calm finishing touch that has repeatedly rescued his team in tight matches.

“I am focused on giving everything for AFC Leopards in every match,” Ssenyonjo said. His journey from an early career in Uganda to becoming a key player at AFC Leopards highlights his growth and determination.

A Rising Star

Ssenyonjo first gained attention at KCCA FC, where his instinct in front of goal set him apart as one of Uganda’s most promising young attackers. His consistent scoring and standout performances marked him as a rising talent in Ugandan football circles. “I always knew I could score goals at the highest level,” he said.

A move to Wakiso Giants followed, where opportunities were more limited, but the experience helped shape his tactical awareness and physical resilience. At Bright Stars, consistency was harder to find, but discipline and patience became key lessons in his career. “I never stopped working, even when things were difficult,” he reflected.

A New Challenge

The turning point came at Express FC, where Ssenyonjo rediscovered his scoring touch and delivered a strong campaign, reviving his reputation as a clinical striker. That resurgence earned him a major move to AFC Leopards in September 2025, marking his first professional experience outside Uganda and a step into one of East Africa’s most competitive leagues. “I wanted a new challenge, and Kenya gave me that opportunity,” he said.

At AFC Leopards, Ssenyonjo has continued to evolve, balancing expectation, responsibility, and ambition in a season where every goal carries significant weight for the club’s title aspirations. “I want to keep pushing and help the team achieve something special,” he said.

Team Confidence and Leadership

Ssenyonjo’s influence extends beyond just scoring goals; he has lifted the team’s confidence during difficult phases of games, especially in high-pressure fixtures where margins are thin. “I always believe my moment will come in every game,” he said. That belief has translated into crucial contributions, including a hat-trick earlier in the season and decisive goals that have kept Leopards within touching distance of the league summit.

His performances have also highlighted improved link-up play, with better understanding of midfield runners and wide attackers, making Leopards more unpredictable in the final third. “I want to keep improving with every match I play,” he added.

Despite the growing pressure of a title challenge, Ssenyonjo has maintained a grounded mindset, focusing on consistency rather than personal accolades. “I am not thinking about records, only about winning games,” he said. He has also acknowledged the intensity of competition within the squad, noting that internal competition has pushed him to elevate his standards in training and matches. “I respect every player in this team because we all push each other,” he said.

Coach’s Perspective

Head coach Fred Ambani has emphasized balance in the squad, ensuring the striker is protected from burnout while still being relied upon in key moments. “He is progressing well, but we must manage him carefully,” Ambani said. He has also praised Ssenyonjo’s attitude in training, noting his willingness to learn and adapt to tactical instructions. “He listens and improves every single day,” Ambani said.

With the season entering its decisive phase, Ambani has insisted that discipline and unity will determine whether Leopards can sustain their title challenge. “We must stay focused if we want to achieve our objectives,” he said.

Looking Ahead

As Leopards push deeper into the season, Ssenyonjo remains confident that the squad still has enough quality to challenge for the championship. “I believe we are still strong enough to fight for the title,” he said. Through the pressure and expectations, Ssenyonjo remains the central figure in Leopards’ attacking ambitions, carrying both responsibility and belief as the campaign reaches its climax. “We will keep fighting until the last game,” he said.
