The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has made a significant decision that will reshape the future of the sport. The governing body has approved a major overhaul of the scoring system, with matches set to adopt a new 3×15 format starting from January 4, 2027. Under the new rules, matches will still be played in a best-of-three games format, but each game will be decided by the first player or pair to reach 15 points. BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul emphasized that the reform is intended to modernize the sport without altering its core identity. “We are building a sport that speaks to the next generation, while continuing to invest in the long-term future of our players,” she said. She added that the 3×15 system is designed to deliver “more exciting and competitive badminton, improved scheduling, more consistent match durations, and potential benefits for player welfare and recovery.”
Despite the positive outlook, some stakeholders reportedly raised concerns during the consultation phase. However, the BWF maintained that the sport’s essential qualities will remain unchanged. “We know that change can raise concern, especially in a sport with such strong traditions,” she said. “But this decision does not change the fundamental nature of badminton. The skill, tactics, physical and mental demands, and drama of the sport will remain.”
The federation evaluated five different scoring systems before making the final decision, with the 3×15 format ultimately selected as the preferred option. This choice was based on extensive research and feedback from players, coaches, and tournament organizers.
